Maumee Walleye Run:Check Out This Amazing Fishing Spectacle!
Old School Walleye Fishing Family Secrets
One of the most amazing spectacles in fishing is the world famous Maumee River Walleye run that happens every year near Lake Erie. You can catch your limit fast or go home empty handed. Just a note, there are some basic walleye fishing equipment you will need for your fishing trip. Don't take this list lightly without these items chances are you will go home empty handed.
March of every year normally earmarks the start of the annual spawning migration of the walleye from lake erie up her tributaries. The most famous tributary run is the Maumee river. 1000'S of walleye will migrate up the river starting in March. The date is determined by when the the water temperature reaches near the 40deg mark. The walleye will head up river to their favorite spawning beds and will stage there until the water warms between 42deg - 52deg Fahrenheit and then the females will spawn.Typically, the date the walleye spawn normally occurs is late March or Early April
The 2009 predictions for the Maumee Walleye run have been released by the Ohio Department Of Natural Resources and the size and numbers look excellent! The 2003 class looks to be the leader for walleye that will be caught. It is estimated they will range in size from 18 to 26 inches. If you are looking for that trophy, there also will be some 22 to 30 inch monsters probably caught this year. A 22 to 30inch walleye is a good size fish. These fish are excellent for eating and make for some nice size fillets. There is no better eating then walleye fillets in the skillet. The larger walleye will be from hatches from 1996,1998,1999,and 2001. There has been walleye caught on this run dating back to the 1980's These are extremely large fish and also extremely rare.
If you are wondering where to go so you can fish the annual Maumee walleye run , head to the Conant Street bridge between Perrysburg and Maumee. Wading is the most popular type of fishing the run. Safety is key here, you must be very careful when wading the swift current. The water is extremely cold, and makes it hazardous.
Before you make a decision to fish the walleye run make sure you take note of the following basic walleye fishing equipment you will need.
#1 If you are going to be wading you need to have a good set of chest waders that are insulated. Make sure you also have a belt of some kind around your waist you will need this to mount basic tools.
#2 You will need a good graphite walleye spinning rod 6ft to 7ft in length that is rated Medium lite to medium action.
#3 You will need your spinning reel to match the rod. This is determined by the lure size.
#4 You will need to spool your reel with "fire line" This line is designed not to strech and you can feel even the smallest of nibbles.
#5 You will need a net (remember if you are wading this should be small in size.
#6 You will need a stringer for your fish.
#7 You will need to have floating walleye fishing jig heads tipped with brightly colored plastic tails, fished about 18 to 24-inches below a weight is generally the most successful lure. The amount of weight depends on the amount of current; at low river stages use about 3/8 oz. weight and at high river flow you may need heavier ¾ oz. weight.

Waders: their Breeding, Haunts and Watchers $65 All of the Nethersole-Thompson family contribute in some measure to this book but it is Dr Desmond Nethersole-Thompson's life-long interest in waders which gives the work its exceptional quality and authority. For well over fifty years the study of waders and their behaviour has been his passion, and his great knowledge and experience are internationally recognised. There is a bonus, too, for the reader in the particular freshness and style of his writing which conveys not only his closely observed, patient study but also the joy and satisfaction he has known in watching such intriguing and beautiful birds, mainly in their Scottish habitats. The core of the book is the comprehensive accounts of the biology and behaviour of 18 species of waders in their breeding haunts (see Contents list). In addition there are chapters on waders generally, wader spacing and dispersion, the wader watchers of past and recent times, and two final chapters on new or returning waders and those pipe-dream species that, not too fancifully, may yet breed one day in these islands.Voice is one of the headings within the species accounts but there is also an appendix of sonagrams of wader songs and calls; there are tables of data and an extensive, selected bibliography. Donald Watson has provided more than a hundred drawings to complement and embellish the text and there are 32 photographs. Jacket paintings by Donald Watson |

Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders $12.99 Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders collects forty of John Gierach's finest essays on fishing from six of his books. Like all his writing, these essays are seasoned by a keen sense of observation and a deep knowledge and love of fishing lore, leavened by a wonderfully wry sense of humor. Gierach often begins with an observation that soon leads to something below the surface, which he finds and successfully lands. As Gierach says, writing is a lot like fishing. This is the first anthology of John Gierach's work, a collection that is sure to delight both diehard fans and new readers alike. To enter Gierach's world is to experience the daily wonder, challenge, and occasional absurdity of the fishing life -- from such rituals as the preparation of camp coffee (for best results, serve in a tin cup) to the random, revelatory surprises, such as the flashing beauty of a grayling leaping out of the water. Gierach offers nuggets of practical wisdom on choosing fly patterns and travel companions ("Do not go fishing with someone who is so set on being back at a certain time that he will refuse to invent a case of car trouble to keep you on the water an extra day"), vocabulary ("Expertizing means acting like an expert. Not necessarily being an expert, mind you, but acting like one"), and how to fish metaphorically ("Fly-fishing for trout is poetic; for bass it's somewhat existential; for panfish it's corny, but fun"). In rivers from Colorado to Scotland, whether alone or accompanied by his fishing buddy A.K. ("I enjoy fishing too much to risk my life at it. Death can really cut into your fishing time"), Gierach vividly captures both the subtle rhythms of the angling life and the natural world on which it depends. In "The Purist," John Gierach says of fly-fishing that it "led you inexorably to one paradox after another. The idea was to catch fish, but the best writers made it evident that it was perfectly okay not to as long as you failed to catch them with the proper grace and style." Whether he's catching fish or musing on the ones that got away, Gierach is always entertaining and enlightening, writing with his own inimitable blend of grace and style, passion and wit. |
