Moisture to a piano is very important. Humidity can be the best or worst friend to your piano. To understand this more we must understand how humidity impacts our piano. More than any other factor, humidity will impact the sound and pitch of the piano. A piano made of wood has the ability to expand and contract depending the how much or how little of humid air is present. We will also discuss how the type of room can change and impact how frequently the piano is tuned. This article will also look at how piano covers will protect the piano from daily humidity swings. The over-riding goal is to keep the humidity levels in room consistent and even.
The first thing that we need to know is how humidity affects the piano. Humidity by definition is defined into two categories, absolute humidity and relative humidity. Absolute humidity is the amount of water vapor that is present in the air. Relative humidity is amount of comfort or discomfort one feels. It indicates how much moisture can evaporate from the skin. For our purpose we will be referring to absolute humidity.
Proper Humidity will help keep your piano tuned longer. Wide variations in humidity can make the wood of a piano expand and contract. I can remember my parents scheduling the piano tuner twice a year. Needing it tuned once in the low humidity of the dry winter and once in the high humidity summer. The expansion and contraction of the wood would change from the extremes of each season.
Room size and conditions can also change the humidity in the room. A church, for example, with a large room and high ceiling can have high variations in humidity. Every one remembers going to that large summer church wedding and experiencing the uncomfortable feeling of a very humid church. I can remember the day my sister got married in July. It was an extremely hot and humid day. The humidity made it very uncomfortable.
Piano covers can help. The nice thing about a piano cover is that it can do several things to protect your investment. Piano covers will help keep the humidity at the same level once the room returns to normal. A piano cover will stop direct sunlight. Piano covers are great at keeping the piano finish from discoloration resulting from sun damage.
There are a few companies that make humidity measuring devices, called hygrometers. The idea of the device is to keep the piano at a consistent humidity level. The low cost of such of a device make it a good investment. It can keep your piano in tune a lot longer. It can save the expense of needing to have a professional retune your piano more than once annually.
