Homemade parrot toys are a plus for your parrot. Although they can be bought quite easily, it really is not too difficult to make some yourself. Parrots love toys in their cage so that they have something to play with when no-one else is around. But their toys do not have to be limited to the cage. Many toys can be used outside the cage as well and parrots love playing with toys and their owner as well. They find it challenging and they love the admiration from their proud owner when they do something right.
What sort of toys can you make at home?
One that is so easy to do is a rope tree. It is just a matter of cutting a length of natural cotton rope and tying knots in it down the length and then using some finer rope to tie it to the top of the cage. The parrot will love climbing on this, chewing it and swinging on it.
A variation of this will be to slide some wooden or plastic discs on the rope in between the knots. If you are going to stain the wood to make the toy more attractive, do make sure that there are not toxins in the stain.
These two toys will need the rope thickness varied to suit the size of the parrots you are aiming to entertain. For example the rope could be up to 3/4 inch thickness for large parrots and 1/4 inch thickness for lorikeets and budgerigars.
Another simpler variation is to cut 6 lengths of leather into 20 inch strips 1/2 wide then lay them together and put a tie around the middle, tying them all together so that the ends drop down giving the parrot something to grab a hold of. The tie can then be used to tie the toy to the top of the cage.
In each of these cases the top thread can be pushed through something like a metal or plastic cone before being tied to the top of the cage and this will protect the tying thread from being bitten through.
The rope and cone for these toys should be available from your local craft shop.
For a further variation you could use the knotted rope and then attach a wire loop on the bottom for the parrot to swing on. When you give some serious thought to making parrot toys there are all sorts of items that can be used. Care always needs to be given to the safety of the bird and the products used when making homemade parrot toys.

Tying the Knot - $14.99 Documentary filmmaker Jim de S?ve explores the many issues behind the controversial topic of gay marriage in Tying the Knot, a film which also offers a look at how the legal and societal structures of marriage have changed with time. Tying the Knot focus on two cases of long-term gay couples whose passing led to legal squabbles between the members of their respective families over issues which would have been comparatively clear-cut if the couples had been able to legally marry. In addition, de S?ve interviews activists on both sides of the issue of legally sanctioning same-sex unions, and looks backward at how changing laws regarding women's property rights and interracial marriage have created a precedent for rethinking the legal contract of marriage. Tying the Knot was screened at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |
