BRIGHTEST DAY #0
5 OUT OF 5
This week's most anticipated comic book arrives after the events of the Blackest Night. Tells the story of the 12 individuals resurrected during the event. We also get to see a ‘resurrected' city coming out of the Cry for Justice series finally getting an identity. Looking forward to how the series unfolds. Geoff Johns has mentioned that this series will serve has Hawkman's 'Rebirth.'
THE FLASH #1
5 OUT OF 5
Flash Rebirth untied the history of Barry Allen. The first story arc of the new Flash series seems to be heading the way of reestablishing Barry Allen's rogue gallery. The first issue also introduces a new set of characters from the 25th century called the Renegades, whom are wearing similar Rogues attire. The issue also gives us a teaser to the possible 2011 DC Comic Event: Flashpoint by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert.
ADVENTURE COMICS #10
2 OUT OF 5
The issue serves as part six of Superman: Last Stand of Krypton. Zod assembles a force within the bottle city of Kandor to take out Brainiac. After War of the Supermen storyline Adventure Comics will return to its original numbering in July with issue #516.
BOOSTER GOLD #31
3 OUT OF 5
This is Dan Jurgens final issue of this series before handing it off to Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis. For the most part a quiet and emotional issue about family, forgiveness and healing. The final page sets the stage for two upcoming series: The Return of Bruce Wayne and the 6 issue limited companion series Time Masters: Vanishing Point.
GREEN ARROW #32
4 OUT OF 5
The final issue starts with something I never saw coming and kept on getting better. Green Arrow gets his day in court for killing off Prometheus at the conclusion of Cry for Justice. The issue clearly takes place before Brightest Day #0. The path is set for Green Arrow to begin with a new #1 issue come June.
SEIGE LOKI
5 OUT OF 5
This Seige tie-in takes you into the mind of the true architect of the mayhem on Asgard. Taking place before Seige #4 and Thor #609 The issue takes you into the deals he has made with both Hela the goddess of death and Mephisto.
SEIGE CAPTAIN AMERICA
1 OUT OF 5
An unnecessary tie-in to the Seige event tells the story of immediate aftermath of the fall of Asgard. Both Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes are lead characters working together to save lives before the events of Seige #4.
IRREDEEMABLE SPECIAL #1
2 OUT OF 5
Overall the just seems a filler that doesn't provide any insight into the Irredeemable universe. The issue serves as a prequel to the second year of Irredeemable which reveals secrets and hints into future stories including:
- Hornet's past with Plutonian and his final act of releasing an unknown fail-safe against him, which will be explored with the second year of Irredeemable
- Kaidan origin and relationship with her mother
- Max Damage and Jailbait's first meeting
FARSCAPE SCORPIUS #0
2 OUT OF 5
One of the best all-time scifi villains gets his own special comic. However it may be a wasted effort as it only serves as an introduction to another storyline yet to be revealed. Scorpius briefly reflects on his exile on a Hoth like planet as well as a moment from his past as a scared student in front of his mentor.
COLD SPACE #1
4 FOR 5
A space soap opera co-written by Samuel L. Jackson taking place in 4012. Firefly fans who are in withdrawal take note this is the comic for you. Good setup for the initial story arc.
BATMAN #698
1 Out of 5
After last month's revelations of Black Mask a series of murders rises in Gotham. The issue was painful to read as if the writer was adding more dialogue to make the situations real. It didn't help this issue and left the end of this issue to be anti-climatic. Feels like a filler issue as Batman 700 nears and Grant Morrison takes over.
DOC SAVAGE #1
4 OUT OF 5
As I learned on Fringe, the Empire State Building was originally supposed to be an air terminal for blimps. It's great to see Doc Savage's blimp near the opening scene. As someone new to the Doc Savage universe this is a great and friendly introduction to the pulp icon from the 30's. The back story of Justice Inc., another pulp comic from the 30's, is just as intriguing as one of the characters is kidnapped and the team has to find him.
SIEGE YOUNG AVENGERS #1
3 OUT OF 5
Quiet story after the fall of Asgard as we examine the interrelationships between the team members of Young Avengers. Good story if you are a Young Avengers fan.
DAREDEVIL #506
4 OUT OF 5
Written by the mastermind who brought you the Losers, Andy Diggle know how to put characters in difficult situations. A great issue and final page revelation that turns the book on its head. Looking forward towards next issue.
HULKED OUT HEROES #1
1 OUT OF 5
Serious WTF?! Please listen up kids….this is the reason you should not do drugs. Cannot believe Mr. Quesada allowed for a second issue.
PUNISHERMAX #6
5 OUT OF 5
One of the best interpretations of Bullseye being both ruthless and realistic. Great dialogue throughout the comic and action sequences and we are only in part one of the story arc. Thanks to comic writer Jason Aaron who brings a breath of fresh air into the Punisher franchise.
IRON MAN LEGACY #1
4 OUT 5
A new Iron Man ongoing series debuts before the movie sequel comes out in two weeks. Great start for the future issue that could resemble a sequel of sorts to the first Iron Man movie. Definitely worth taking notice.
IRON MAN SPOTLIGHT
5 OUT OF 5
This is worth the $3.99 cover price! This book includes:
- Interview with comic artist Adi Granov
- Explores Iron Man 2 comic characters: Whiplash and Black Widow
- Interview with Invincible Iron Man comic writer Matt Fraction
- Interview with Ultimate Comics Iron Man writer Warren Ellis
- Iron Man's memorable moments
NEW MUTANTS #3
4 OUT OF 5
Chapter 3 of the Second Coming storyline running through the X-Men books setting the stage for a new status quo in July. What makes the heroes are the villains and this book is full of them and from my generation: Bastion (Zero Tolerance), William Stryker (Man Loves, God Kills), Cameron Hodge (X-Tinction Agenda). I remember fondly when Warren became Archangel and it is wonderful seeing him in this issue. Great use of the characters and their mutant skills and final page continuation to the next issue.
WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #7
1 OUT OF 5
Nothing that really adds to the current Gauntlet storyline currently running in the Amazing Spider-man series. This issue explores marriage of Kraven the Hunter to his wife Sasha.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN GRIM HUNT – THE KRAVEN SAGA
2 OUT OF 5
Pointless issue that sets the stage for Amazing Spider-Man #634. Summary of stuff regarding what has happened previously in Amazing Spider-Man as well as the detailed history of Kraven the Hunter. The issue is great for people who do not know who was the original Kraven.
Amazing Spider-Man Origin of the Hunter
1 OUT OF 5
Another pointless tie-in promoting the Gauntlet storyline running through the Spider-Man books. Just sitting back and waiting for the hype to die down and the real storyline (The Grim Hunt) begins in Amazing Spider-Man #634.

Tying the Knot - $14.99 Documentary filmmaker Jim de S?ve explores the many issues behind the controversial topic of gay marriage in Tying the Knot, a film which also offers a look at how the legal and societal structures of marriage have changed with time. Tying the Knot focus on two cases of long-term gay couples whose passing led to legal squabbles between the members of their respective families over issues which would have been comparatively clear-cut if the couples had been able to legally marry. In addition, de S?ve interviews activists on both sides of the issue of legally sanctioning same-sex unions, and looks backward at how changing laws regarding women's property rights and interracial marriage have created a precedent for rethinking the legal contract of marriage. Tying the Knot was screened at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |
