Your rod and reel are the most important parts of your fly fishing equipment. There are some simple things you can do to make sure they will give you years of great service.

There really not much to say about maintaining coils, other than ... lubricate according to the manufacturers instructions! As with anything that has moving parts, friction develops. The excessive heat caused by friction causes wear which should not occur if the part has been lubricated. The best lubricant to use lithium grease - do not try to squirt 10W-30 inside your reel!

For most, reels today require little maintenance and you should not have much to do to keep fit. One thing that is very important, especially if you spend time on the water at all salt is to rinse your reels completely and thoroughly in fresh water. It's a good idea to give a quick rinse your reels in any case after each fishing trip, to remove dirt and grime.

Check for pieces of land between the coil and the coil. coils today are generally built with very close tolerances, and a little grain can cause the coil to not function properly.

You might also consider cleaning the cork drag system. Wipe with a paper towel, making sure to remove any dust or sand on the surface.

Most anglers spend more money on their fly rods than any other piece of tackle.
