Fly fishing is all about presenting a fly that precisely mimics the color, size, pattern, and movement of the natural food supply that exists in that particular location at that particular time of year.
Selecting the best fly for the job is as easy as going to the fishing location to observe both ground-based and aquatic insects frequenting the spot. It is also good to pay particular attention to the types of flying insects and other food being taken while skimming the surface of the water.
They will move on the water like the fly that is being cast out, and they are therefore the easiest to mimic. Make sure the selected fly has attributes closely resembling the natural food of the species of fish being sought too. Insects might just be too small for the fish being hunted.
Once the color, size, and pattern match the fish's local food supply it is time to work on presentation. The fly's presentation is affected by an angler's technique and the equipment being used.
