Supplies to Pack During Your Fishing Outing in Alaska
So, you've finally booked that Alaska fishing trip. After years of dreaming of King Salmon, massive Halibut and incredible Rainbow Trout, you're finally getting there. But, what are you going to pack? How will you stay warm on the water and cool in the hot sun? What kind of equipment and gear should you bring?
For a handy list of what to pack for your Alaska fishing tour, read on. However, be advised that this packing list is for people going on a chartered or guided trip and is not intended as a complete guide for others planning an independent or self-catering camping expedition.
Your Fishing Gear
Exactly what fishing gear you wind up bringing will likely depend on what's provided by your tour or charter company. Some guides provide a full outfit, right down to a cooler to store your fish, bait and tackle. Others only supply the boat and the safety gear. So, before you begin packing every spinner and spoon you have, check with your charter company to see what they are able to supply.
Comfortable Rain Gear
"You get what you pay for," is very true when it comes to truly useful rain gear. The fishing season is rainy, so invest in high-quality and breathable rainwear like Gore-Tex. It will keep you dry and warm on your Alaska fishing trip, but shouldn't inhibit your movement or trap in perspiration.
Clothes You Can Layer
Fishing season can be dangerous as it runs from a hot noon sun to frosty cold nights. So, pack clothes that can be layered, will dry fast and give your body room to breathe. Look for brands like Smartwool, a wool product that doesn't trap sweat, keeps you cool and dry and will dry fast if needed.
Dry Bags
If you're bringing your passport, fishing licenses, wallet and electronics like your Blackberry or digital camera, you're going to want high-quality waterproof bags because Ziploc bags simply won't cut it. Seal Line is a great brand that makes dry bags in a range of sizes.
For non-essential items like your wet boots or grimy waders, pack some extra garbage bags and plastic shopping bags. You can use these to keep the dry and wet items separated in your suitcase.
Accessories
Your accessories kit should include personal items like your hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, powerful and non-aerosol bug spray or cream, gloves and toiletries.
Though your charter guide should provide a first-aid kit for the tour, you should always pack a small, personal survival kit of your own for your Alaska fishing trip, in case you're separated from the group. Your survival kit should fit in your pocket and include waterproof matches, a piece of chalk or crayon, compass, an energy bar and a few water purification tablets.
On the surface, these items may seem unimportant and simply more weight to lug around. No one, after all, thinks they will encounter serious danger on a vacation. However, when in the great outdoors, these are a small inconvenience for which you will be grateful if you need any after all.

Tex - $8.99 Tex represented the first film adaption of a novel by "teen angst" specialist S. E. Hinton. Matt Dillon stars as Tex McCormick, an Oklahoma farm boy who drifts into bad company and a dangerous lifestyle after his mother dies and his father deserts him. His older brother Mason (Jim Metzler) struggles to keep his sibling on the straight and narrow, but he too has a cross to bear: his crippling lack of self-worth. Surprisingly, the film was produced by the Disney company, which heretofore had painted a more upbeat portrait of teen-age life. Dillon would go on to appear in two more Hinton adaptations, while Tex supporting player Emilio Estevez would show up in an additional three. S.E. Hinton herself appears in the small role of Mrs. Barnes, a schoolteacher. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Waders: their Breeding, Haunts and Watchers $65 All of the Nethersole-Thompson family contribute in some measure to this book but it is Dr Desmond Nethersole-Thompson's life-long interest in waders which gives the work its exceptional quality and authority. For well over fifty years the study of waders and their behaviour has been his passion, and his great knowledge and experience are internationally recognised. There is a bonus, too, for the reader in the particular freshness and style of his writing which conveys not only his closely observed, patient study but also the joy and satisfaction he has known in watching such intriguing and beautiful birds, mainly in their Scottish habitats. The core of the book is the comprehensive accounts of the biology and behaviour of 18 species of waders in their breeding haunts (see Contents list). In addition there are chapters on waders generally, wader spacing and dispersion, the wader watchers of past and recent times, and two final chapters on new or returning waders and those pipe-dream species that, not too fancifully, may yet breed one day in these islands.Voice is one of the headings within the species accounts but there is also an appendix of sonagrams of wader songs and calls; there are tables of data and an extensive, selected bibliography. Donald Watson has provided more than a hundred drawings to complement and embellish the text and there are 32 photographs. Jacket paintings by Donald Watson |

Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders $12.99 Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders collects forty of John Gierach's finest essays on fishing from six of his books. Like all his writing, these essays are seasoned by a keen sense of observation and a deep knowledge and love of fishing lore, leavened by a wonderfully wry sense of humor. Gierach often begins with an observation that soon leads to something below the surface, which he finds and successfully lands. As Gierach says, writing is a lot like fishing. This is the first anthology of John Gierach's work, a collection that is sure to delight both diehard fans and new readers alike. To enter Gierach's world is to experience the daily wonder, challenge, and occasional absurdity of the fishing life -- from such rituals as the preparation of camp coffee (for best results, serve in a tin cup) to the random, revelatory surprises, such as the flashing beauty of a grayling leaping out of the water. Gierach offers nuggets of practical wisdom on choosing fly patterns and travel companions ("Do not go fishing with someone who is so set on being back at a certain time that he will refuse to invent a case of car trouble to keep you on the water an extra day"), vocabulary ("Expertizing means acting like an expert. Not necessarily being an expert, mind you, but acting like one"), and how to fish metaphorically ("Fly-fishing for trout is poetic; for bass it's somewhat existential; for panfish it's corny, but fun"). In rivers from Colorado to Scotland, whether alone or accompanied by his fishing buddy A.K. ("I enjoy fishing too much to risk my life at it. Death can really cut into your fishing time"), Gierach vividly captures both the subtle rhythms of the angling life and the natural world on which it depends. In "The Purist," John Gierach says of fly-fishing that it "led you inexorably to one paradox after another. The idea was to catch fish, but the best writers made it evident that it was perfectly okay not to as long as you failed to catch them with the proper grace and style." Whether he's catching fish or musing on the ones that got away, Gierach is always entertaining and enlightening, writing with his own inimitable blend of grace and style, passion and wit. |
