Streamer Fly Tying

Michigan is blessed with many great rivers that steelhead call home for short time periods during their lives. Considered by many to be one of the greatest fresh water sport fish, steelhead can challenge the fly fishers patience, tackle and angling skills.

A few of the greatest rivers in Michigan for steelhead include the Muskegon river, Manistee river and Pere Marquette river. Each has its own distinct appearance, flows, terrain and more. More importantly though, each has its place in the livelihood of Michigan's steelhead fishery as a significant percentage of these great game fish are naturally reproduced.

Steelhead come into such rivers in the fall to eat and in the spring to spawn. Many fall fish "holdover" in the rivers throughout the winter and are typically the first to spawn in the spring. Those that either don't come in very far or don't run at all in the fall, make their way to the pier heads of lake Michigan come early spring to head up their natal rivers.

Prime time in the fall is shortly after the majority of the fall salmon have already spawned, which is from late October through mid-late December. Spring fish arrive around early March and are available to the fly fisher through late May.

A bonus to Michigan anglers specific to steelhead is that, contrary to their big game cousin the salmon, not all steelhead die after spawning and they provide great "drop back fishing" while they navigate their way back to lake Michigan after successfully spawning.

Techniques for fly fishing to steelhead include drift-fish nymphing, also known as "chuck-n-duck", indicator nymph fishing with floating line and streamer fishing. Any dry fly action is most often limited to night fishing during the famous "hex hatch" of mid-summer and the rare occurrence of a day time surface take. The technique(s) chosen are often associated with the time of year and body of water, as well as personal preference.

Spring finds Michigan steelhead amidst their annual spawning run. At this time they can be fished during 3 distinctly different stages of their spawning schedule. Before their actual spawn, they're "staging" in pools and runs near spawning grounds and can be quick to snap at a passing nymph, leech, egg or baitfish pattern. While in the act of spawning (not the most preferred, however if done correctly, will put minimal stress on the fish), males will congregate around females as the lady's prepare the spawning area, known as a "redd". By fishing over the working females, it's possible to put a fly in the zone where males are jockeying amongst themselves to determine who gets spawning rights. After they successfully spawn, many steelhead begin their return trip to lake Michigan, a.k.a. "drop back" and are fished to during this time as well.

Both drift fishing and floating line/indicator rigs can and are used at all times that steelhead are in Michigan rivers. Streamer fishing can be good when the water temperatures are conducive to a fish moving on and striking a streamer pattern. To generalize, steelhead are not very receptive to chasing down a streamer when the water temperature drops below the 33-34 degree mark.

Fly Tying with Common Household Materials

Fly Tying with Common Household Materials

$17.54

How to save money and get better results--including 300 full-color photos The novice fly fisherman starts fly tying with a predictable set of materials. His bench is neatly arranged with small bags of elk hair, pheasant feathers, stray pieces of chenille and yarn. But eventually he finds that not only are these materials more expensive than they need to be, they are also largely unnecessary. And so he starts making substitutions, using trial and error to gradually build up a bench of funky, personalized materials that work just as well as what the "experts" recommend. For the first time, here is a book that truly demystifies fly tying, making it accessible to any fisherman with a vice, a hook, a few dabs of glue, and a handful of twisty-ties. Tying legend Jay "Fishy" Fullum brings together a lifetime of substitution experience to give invaluable advice on appropriate substitution materials. He describes how to find them and make them tier friendly, and how to turn them into flies that are practically guaranteed to catch fish.
