Steelhead Flies
![]() |
When the steelhead start migrating up the streams in the fall, it is time to select the flies that steelhead go crazy for. In my part of the country we start heavily fishing the tributaries of Lake Erie in October. Just when you think you have the best fly figured out, the weather can change and so does the fishing. I'm not always sure what motivates a steelhead, or any other fish for that matter. So look to one or more of the many types of buggers to start with.
Buggers, or wooly (woolly ) buggers are versatile and one a lot of people start with. Their wooly look comes from the chenille/fur body. With the addition of different colors of feathers used for the marabou tails and hackle, what seems like an infinite number patterns are available. Fish may seem finicky, but they will often bite on a variety of looks. Buggers can be tied in so many ways that they may look like hellgrammites, nymphs, all sorts of other insects, or crayfish, baitfish, etc.
Buggers are a wet fly. They are meant to sink down into the water and mimic something edible that lives underwater. Just as there are so many types of buggers, there are just as many opinions on how to retrieve them. For that reason, you will want an assortment of wooly buggers with you.
Don't forget the fly rod. The line weight is a critical factor. You will want an 8 weight (although 6 may be enough if the steelhead aren't particularly large). The heavier line lets you fight the fish and the current. You will want a rod that is 9-10 feet or longer. The rod needs to be able to absorb the sudden shock of the steelhead taking the bait and allowing you to wrestle the fish better. Find a rod that is light enough that you will be comfortable doing a lot of casting. This is one time that the quality of the rod may be critically important. Don't end up disappointed losing that trophy steelhead because you settled for poorly made equipment.
If there is one complaint about buggers, it's that they take the challenge out of fly fishing. I have read that some people won't let on they are using a wooly bugger because it is so deadly that it seems to give an unfair advantage. So go ahead and use one, but keep it a secret.

There were just too many ways that things could go wrong and they did. Plus it was just a wild idea. But despite a series of setbacks and some long odds seven Bozeman men managed to helicopter in to a remote British Columbia river and catch steelhead on dry flies while making a documentary film of the unusual adventure. We got really really really lucky said Jesse Atkins 29 one of five Bozeman anglers featured in the film. The main fishing concept alone was sketchy catching steelhead on dry flies. Steelhead are searunning rainbow trout that are known to be finicky where fish caught are measured in hours spent angling not in numbers hauled in.And the idea that the wild fish would rise to eat hatching bugs although documented in angling literature is seldom seen and may never have been captured on film. This kind of thing is not supposed to happen said Paul Tarantino 37 the owner of a Bozeman restaurant and the prod |

The Orvis Pocket Guide to Great Lakes Salmon and Steelhead: Tips, Tactics, and Techniques * Plus, Where to Fish and When $19 Aimed at the trout and small game fisherman prepared to challenge bigger fish, this book covers everything from how these Pacific Ocean gamefish got to the Great Lakes in the first place, to how to gear up for them, fish for them, and ultimately how to land them. In succinct chapters, lifetime Great Lakes fisherman Matthew Supinski covers every aspect of these great gamefish. He begins with descriptions of their prey, the life cycles of salmon and steelhead, their habits in migration, what they look for in a fly, and when they want it. He explains the kinds of insects found in the Great Lakes, along with their hatching cycles, and explains variations in flies based on this knowledge. The author also provides tips on how to read the water, with particular emphasis on the peculiarities of the Great Lakes region, including manmade and natural influences. Finally, perhaps the most exciting part of catching salmon and steelhead on the fly is the spectacular fighting performance these fish put on. Like riding a bronco, their leaps, hard-thrashing runs, and refusal to submit will addict the angler to ocean-run fish for life. Supinski offers invaluable advice on how to fight and land these giants. No fisherman will want to approach these legendary waters without The Orvis Pocket Guide to Great Lakes Salmon and Steelhead. |
