The super rich can afford some extraordinary toys. We are talking about those who have billions (yes, with an 's') of dollars in net worth and control companies that operate in the tens of billions of dollars. One of their favorite toys is private jet. But these are not your standard executive aircraft from Gulfstream or Learjets, these are custom fitted commercial airliners. What they pay is amazing.
Boeing was one of the first major commercial aircraft manufacturers to sell airliners for private use. In 1996 they started selling the Boeing 737 for thirty million dollars to those who could afford them. Understand, that the 737 are the same aircraft Southwest Airlines uses almost predominately in its fleet. Southwest moves more people than any other airline on these aircraft.
Fast-forward to the present day and the super rich consider the 737 a quaint private jet. The super rich are looking at the Airbus 380, which has a price tag of three hundred million dollars.
Or they like the Boeing 767, which is enjoyed by the founders of Google Serge Brin and Larry Page. The price tag for the 767 is over a hundred million dollars and can reach over one hundred fifty million dollars depending on options.
The not even on the market yet Boeing 747-8 is already being sold for almost three hundred million. Four of these private airliners have been sold, meaning Boeing has grossed a billion dollars in sales for an aircraft that has not even been delivered anywhere yet. The commercial passenger model is not to be released until 2011. It has a twenty million dollar luxury upgrade that can be purchased. When one is already spending two eighty million on a private jet, why wouldn't they want the upgrade?
