Spey Fly Line

Along with terms like "line weight," those new to fly fishing are faced with new nomenclature not found in other styles of angling. Fly lines are often called "weight forward" or "double taper." For some specialized fly fishing such as lake or stillwaters, there are "sinking tips" and full sink lines. And then there are even other specialized styles that often require different fly lines for best performance such as spey or two handed casting.

The majority of anglers however, will probably purchase a floating line as their first line, for fishing rivers and streams. Floating lines are exactly that: They float on the water. They are traditionally used in dry fly fishing when the angler is trying to attract fish using an imitation of a floating insect. However, in many river fishing conditions, floating lines are still suitable for those times when the angler wants to fish sub surface using nymphs and wet flies.

So what are the differences between a "weight forward" and "double taper" floating fly line?

Essentially, a double taper line is constructed so that there is no front (tip) or rear of the line. Either end can be attached to the backing, which is a type of "filler" line for the reel. Most fly lines are about 90' in length, and even if this is all that would ever be required to cast and fight fish, fly line should still be attached to a braided line called "backing" that fills the fly reel spool partially.

Weight forward lines on the other hand, are constructed in such a way that only one end should be attached to the backing. Weight forward lines are not reversible. However they do offer advantages over double taper lines. At the same time, double taper lines are well suited to some conditions such as fishing small rivers and spring creeks where superior roll casting is desired. Many old time fly fishing instructors prefer beginners to learn fly casting with double taper line as they believe it promotes developing skill in casting accuracy.

Some experts believe that up to 40 feet in casting distances, there is no real difference between double taper and weight forward lines. However, weight forward lines do seem to provide some additional benefits when distance past 40 feet is desired.

Ultimately, you might want to give both types of line a try and decide for yourself.

Another confusion about fly lines that often comes up is the way in which they are rated, ie. "line weight."
