Although it can be difficult for children of a young age to learn how to cast a fly rod, they still can have a lot of fun while learning about the sport. Most children of a young age simply are not ready to learn to do the forward and back cast. However, don't let that stop you from getting your kids involved in angling with a fly rod. If you're child is having problems with the casting, you can always let the boy or girl help you with the retrieve. One of the most exciting things for both my son and me was the day he did all the retrieving while I did the casting and a beautiful 22 inch rainbow trout hit the fly.
Another thing that many children really enjoy is fly tying. It can be surprising at how fast their fingers can figure out what they are supposed to do when wrapping thread around the shaft of a hook. My own son took an interest in fly tying at the age of about 2 1/2 years old, and he'd often sit on my knee while asking to help. He'd take the bobbin in his little hand and slowly but carefully wind the thread on.
Of course, you do need a lot of patience. This is not about production fly tying but it is about helping along the interest of a little one in the sport of fly fishing and tying.
When a child is old enough to handle the thread bobbin and materials on their own it is time to get them their own vice. Having his or her own materials and equipment will give the child a greater sense of pride in their work as well as their accomplishments.
Of course, you likely won't be expecting your child to tie up complicated patterns like a Yellow Humpy, but simple patterns like Woolly Buggers and many chironomid fly tying patterns are perfect for a young child.
In many parts of the world, fly fishing comes to an end during the winter months, and this is a perfect time to spend many of those cold evenings with your child and their fly tying vice. Make sure you purchase a fly box for your child, and if you help him or her fill it up over the winter, you'll have a child in the spring that will be excited to get out on the water with you.
Although advanced fly fishing techniques may be difficult for a child to pick up, simple fly fishing flies can be taught more readily. Children seem to love working with their hands and creating things. Take advantage of this and they may just be tying your flies for you.
