Fly fishing is an expensive sport. Rods can cost above $600.00 and reels can cost more than $800.00. Fly lines regularly run in the $60.00 range. These are extremes but they set the pattern for the entire industry. This leads the budget conscious angler looking for fly fishing liquidators.
Some of the top manufacturers have local factory stores where you can buy tackle at discounted prices. Orvis in the northeast has two factory outlets: one in Manchester, NH, the other in Lake George, NY. Sage has a factory store at Bainbridge, Wash. Like most factory stores, these outlets give the fly fisherman an opportunity to buy blemished but perfectly fishable equipment at rock bottom prices.
True liquidators offer fly fishing gear, when available, in big lots. Liquidation.com is a good example. You might have to wait a blue moon to find an item that you need. But it is an interesting site for bargain hunters. If large lots of fishing gear do come up they are usually bought up by the close-out sites like flyshopcloseouts.com and fishingsupplyliquidators.com, the latter although it comes up in a search of fly fishing liquidators seems to concentrate on spinning rods and tackle.
But the biggest liquidator of all is, of course, eBay. With eBay's excellent search engine, you can narrow your search down to Redington reels and presently get 12 hits. One thing you must watch out for in eBay buying is excess shipping charges. There was a reel with a fly line a few days ago selling for $75 but the shipping charges were $10. On further examination I saw that the reel was on sale from Australia and then the shipping charges didn't seem so exorbitant. But domestic shippers who just slide the item into a U.S. Mail Priority Service shipping box and pass the laziness onto you in a $10.00 charge to ship a 10 ounce item should be penalized by a lower bid.
Speaking of lower bids, both patience and quick action are required to get a true bargain on eBay. Wait for the item you want it will eventually come up for sale. Just like fly fishing liquidators patience is truly a virtue. If you need the item right away go to one of the discount houses, like Sierra Trading Post, but if you can live a while without it, scan eBay every other day or so and if what you desire comes up for bid put it on the watch list. You might want to put in a low-ball bid and see it you can get it through, but be ready during the last few minutes of trading to put in your true bid.
