Okay, so you are the market for new luggage and you are thinking big - Leather Luggage! Why not treat yourself? Not so fast - before you drop a load of money I would like to present a few quick tips that will save you a few dollars and help you get the quality luggage you expect.

Like many luxury items, good leather luggage can be quite expensive but should also last years (or even a lifetime) with the proper selection and long term care. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when shopping for leather bags or luggage:

• Spend the extra money and make sure you get full grain leather or top grain leather. Full grain is more expensive but both are from the outer/top layers of the animal hide - very durable and pliable with a luxurious feel. Both are ideal choices for bags or luggage.
• Avoid anything labeled "Genuine Leather" - this almost certainly means it is bonded leather - a conglomeration of glues, leather fibers, and other man-made materials merged together. It will not be durable long term with frequent use.
• Examine the luggage in person at least once so you can look at the craftsmanship - specifically the seaming and stitching.
• Select leather luggage that comes with a lifetime warranty. In theory, you should not need it, but many companies (e.g Orvis) offer this because they know the durability of leather bags is great.
• Shop online, but check your local papers too. Many larger chains like Macy's often has great deals on leather luggage periodically.

You should expect to pay a premium for a luxury good, whether it is a full luggage set or a simple leather briefcase. Do not go cheap, get the best quality possible (again, top grain or full grain leather if possible!), and do some comparison shopping.
