Four Essential Brook Trout Fishing Tips
One of the most commonly fished for species of trout is the Brook Trout because of the challenge it's known to present. It is the smallest species of trout, so finding these clever fish can sometimes be difficult if you don't know where to look. It also helps to understand their color patterns and behavior to better identify them when you're fishing. In addition to knowing what they look like and where to find them, if you understand which bait to use and how to cast your line then your brook trout fishing success is sure to increase. In this article we will discuss four important brook trout fishing tips that can help you the next time you are on the water with them.
1. It is very important to know what Brook Trout look like before understanding anything else. As we mentioned, they are the smallest of trout. They have a subtle marbled pattern across their entire body, and they are known to have small red spots on some areas as well. These guys can be pretty hard to catch if you don't know what you're looking for or how to identify them.
2. Knowing where to find Brook Trout is just as important, or more important, than knowing about their appearance. Like all species of trout, Brookies especially love cold water. They typically won't be found in water warmer than 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Usually they will be in waters much colder than that. They also require more dissolved oxygen than other trout species, so fast-moving streams and rivers can be another good spot to look for them. They will spend some time in covered areas just as all trout do so that they are not exposed to their predators. If you are fishing in a mountain stream or river near a small waterfall with a pool then you will likely find some Brook Trout. Especially if there are lots of rocks, undercut banks and overhanging trees.
3. Understanding which types of bait and tackle to use for Brook Trout can be very critical to your fishing success. If you are interested in using artificial lures then small spinners work really well. Live bait is always a good option too. A gang hook with a regular garden worm can be highly effective because the hook is small and can be disguised by the bait. Keep in mind that this species of trout is small, so big tackle is not necessary. If you like to go fly fishing or are interested in learning then it wouldn't be a bad idea to try it on Brook Trout. Fly fishing can be very effective for catching them because of where they are located and the insects they eat.
4. Use the angled casting method for rivers and streams. Position yourself on the bank and face out toward the water perpendicular to the current and river bank. Imagine a clock and that twelve o'clock is straight in front of you. Try casting your line at eleven o'clock if the downstream is to your right or at one o'clock if downstream is to your left. This allows the end of your line to float downstream over the trout, and by waiting a little while you can give them time to feel out the situation and then go for a bite.
