Trout fishing usually means fly fishing - or using flies to catch those trout. Experienced, die hard, fly fishermen may laugh at the possibility of using anything natural for trout bait. However, you may find some circumstances where live bait will actually increase your chances of a good catch.
Let us say that you are using a nymph for your fly. An artificial nymph is made to look and act like an adult insect. The problem arises if the water where you are fishing is not home to very many nymph-like insects. In that case, the trout in that water will most likely not be very interested in feeding on what you have to offer them. This is an instance where using natural bait, such as worms or minnows, can very likely be more effective than the artificial flies.
Another situation may be that the waters you are fishing do, in fact, have a lot of insects - in the summer time. But what if you want to fish those same water in the early spring? In that case, the insects will not have hatched yet so the trout will not be looking for the adult insect for feeding. Again, using a natural bait may work better for you and give you the catch you are looking for.
Trout are very sensitive to smell and sight and depend on those senses for finding their feed. If they are hanging out in water that is very muddy or murky, they will have a more difficult time detecting your flies. Because of the murky water, they will have trouble both seeing and smelling the artificial flies. If they cannot see it or smell it, they certainly will not be interested in eating it. This is another instance where choosing to use natural bait for trout fishing may give you more success than using the artificial flies.
What is the best natural bait? Minnows and nightcrawlers usually top the list of most fishermen. Most trout will feed on these almost any time. If you are going to use minnows, though, it is important to make sure that they are kept alive in a minnow bucket until you are ready to use them.
For mimicking insects without taking up fly fishing, you can also try crickets or grasshoppers along with the nightcrawlers and minnows. Stoneflies and crayfish have also worked very well as bait for trout fishing.
