Bhimu my elder brother's partner and at least 10 years my senior suddenly turned back to leave and in the process bumped into me literally and the book slipped out of my hand. This was sometime in the early sixties. Picking up the book quickly from the floor he read the title of the book aloud, "WAITING FOR THE MAHATMA. Oh! RK Narain (RKN). A great writer isn't he Eknaath?", he asked me.
"Of course he is. I'm a great fan of his."- I said.
"At one time RKN used to visit us you know?"
I was excited to know this, "How do you know him Bhimanna? Does he call on you even now?"
"Not now. He used to do that earlier when my elder brother Raghunath Sharma was alive."
What I gathered from him in short was something like this:
Raghunath Sharma was well known during his time for his planchette that was unique! He would sit before a table with a dozen sharpened pencils, a few post cards and a note-pad before him and just close his eyes. The visiting spirit would take complete charge of his hand that would start scribbling... At times it would be in a language unknown to him also!
Once when he was seated thus as per diktat of a visiting spirit that of a dead woman he had scribbled down something on a post-card and mailed it. And a few days thereafter Mr. RK Narain the novelist called on him. Shri Raghunath Sharma never used to read English novels and had not ever heard of RKN! When he got to learn the purpose of RKN's visit, once again he sat before his table as usual with closed eyes.
It transpired that sometime earlier when RKN was out of station his wife had suddenly succumbed to a brief illness and RKN was so shocked by the sudden demise of his wife that he never entered their bedroom thereafter which incidentally was kept locked.
At this stage I said, "Thereafter RKN went back to Mysore and found to his utter shock everything conveyed by the spirit to be right! Isn't it?"
"Oh! So I've already told this earlier is it?" he asked me.
"No. I got it from RKN direct. I've read it all in his novel English Teacher." I replied.
Instead of being put off by the sarcasm he said, "If that is the case he has utilized this real life experience in his book" This of course was something that couldn't be rejected out of hand and so I had to give him the benefit of doubt.
Years later I read it in The Illustrated Weekly. In an interview RKN himself revealed that the incident narrated in the novel was something that had really happened in his life.
To my mind this incident proves beyond any trace of doubt that the spirit of the dead continues to feel concern for whatever left undone during its earthly sojourn. At least for the person concerned it constitutes incontrovertible evidence to prove that.
I left Bank of India in 1995 after serving that glorious institution for over 32 years under voluntary Retirement Scheme and took up acting as a career. Although I have a flair for writing I had never tried my hand at writing for Newspapers/Magazines earlier. This incident proved to be a causative factor in my becoming a writer. Ever since I've been writing for DECCAN HERALD, MID-DAY, FREE PRESS JOURNAL & AFTERNOON DESPATCH & COURIER as also late Minoo Masani's magazine FREEDOM FIRST.

Anthony Rivers's "Love Is 2 Blame," Malcolm is devastated after a two-year relationship with Shaylisa ends. Never Eat Alone $13.99 Do you want to get ahead in life? Climb the ladder to personal success? The secret, master networker Keith Ferrazzi claims, is in reaching out to other people. As Ferrazzi discovered early in life, what distinguishes highly successful people from everyone else is the way they use the power of relationships—so that everyone wins. In Never Eat Alone , Ferrazzi lays out the specific steps—and inner mindset—he uses to reach out to connect with the thousands of colleagues, friends, and associates on his Rolodex, people he has helped and who have helped him. The son of a small-town steelworker and a cleaning lady, Ferrazzi first used his remarkable ability to connect with others to pave the way to a scholarship at Yale, a Harvard MBA, and several top executive posts. Not yet out of his thirties, he developed a network of relationships that stretched from Washington’s corridors of power to Hollywood’s A-list, leading to him being named one of Crain’s 40 Under 40 and one of Davos’ Global Leader for Tomorrow. Ferrazzi's form of connecting to the world around him is based on generosity, helping friends connect with other friends. Ferrazzi distinguishes genuine relationship-building from the crude, desperate glad-handling usually associated with “networking.” He then distills his system of reaching out to people into practical, proven principles. Among them: Don’t keep score: It’s never simply about getting what you want. It’s about getting what you want and making sure that the people who are important to you get what they want, too. “Ping” constantly: The Ins and Outs of reaching out to those in your circle of contacts all the time—not just when you need something. Never eat alone: The dynamics of status are the same whether you’re working at a corporation or attending a society event— “invisibility” is a fate worse than failure. In the course of the book, Ferrazzi outlines the timeless strategies shared by the world’s most connected individuals, from Katherine Graham to Bill Clinton, Vernon Jordan to the Dalai Lama. Chock full of specific advice on handling rejection, getting past gatekeepers, becoming a “conference commando,” and more, Never Eat Alone is destined to take its place alongside How to Win Friends and Influence People as an inspirational classic. |

Never Tell A Lie $4.99 It all started with the yard sale. Ivy was eight months and one week pregnant when she insisted that she and her husband, David, clean out the junk they'd inherited with the old Victorian house they'd bought three years before. Call it nesting, call it nerves - she just wanted it all gone: the old electrical fixtures, the boxes of National Geographics from the 1960s, the four black wool greatcoats. Neither she nor David recognized the woman at first. But it turned out that the customer asking about the lime-green glass swan dish - the woman who looks just about as pregnant as Ivy - was none other than Melinda White, a former high school classmate of David and Ivy's. When Melinda was a child she used to play in their new house, she explained. It looked like they'd been doing some work. Would it be all right if she took a look around? David took Melinda inside. And she never came out. Now David's under police suspicion, and Ivy finds herself digging deep into the past to clear his name. But David's history, she begins to discover, is not necessarily the history she remembers, and before long Ivy has uncovered a twisted web of deceit, betrayal, and lies, both the ones we tell those we love and the ones we tell ourselves. . . . Relentlessly fast-paced and disturbingly creepy, Never Tell a Lie is a page-turning thrill ride about how well we know the people we love, and how far we are willing to go to protect the secrets of our past. |
