There are many types of fishing, and the use of spearguns is an aspect of angling that is often overlooked by the mainstream. While using a speargun might seem strange, this has long been a common practice in many saltwater fishing areas, like off of Hawaii or the coast of Belize. But saltwater snorkelers aren't the only ones who get to have fun. Most states allow fishing with a spear under limited circumstances.

The seasons are usually limited, and vary from state to state. One of the key rules that is true in most places is that "junk" fish, or invasive species, are open game while traditional sports fish are off limits. This means it can be illegal to use a speargun on bass, walleye, muskie, northern pike, or trout but be completely legal on carp, chum, Asian carp, amur, and other types of non sports fish. Catfish are a state to state consideration since they are game fish in some states, but not in others.

Most states will also have rules on what type of spears are legal. Most allow for only three prongs or less, with only one barb. Spears must be connected to the speargun with fishing line or rope to keep the fish hooked and allow it to be reeled in.

Always make sure to use a speargun safely. Never aim at another person, and keep it unloaded until you are at the water and ready to use it. Follow any local rules and safety regulations and you will have a much better chance of having a great time on the water.
