If your water heater is located in a cold basement, you really need to insulate it or you'll be throwing money away. You can save 20% of your water heating energy bill every month just by wrapping your water heater. Home improvement stores sell special water heater jacket kits that can cost up to $40. By making your own hot water heater blanket using $5 worth of 48-inch wide reflective foil insulation (available by the yard at hardware stores) and a $5 roll of aluminum foil tape (no other tape will do), you can save $30 for a half hour's work.

1. Measure the girth of your water heater tank and cut four 5-inch strips of foil insulation of that size, plus a few inches for overlap. Fold them in two on the long side. Those spacers are essential to create an air space that adds to the insulation and allows the heat to bounce back towards the source;

2. Apply the strips as follows: one near the bottom, one near the top, and the other two evenly spaced;

3. Measure around the water heater again, but on top of one of the spacers this time, add several inches to the result and cut a piece of insulation of that length;

4. Apply the blanket all around, carefully cutting around any pipes or wires. Seal the blanket closed with aluminum foil tape and seal any gaps or slips that you had to make to accommodate pipes and wires;

5. Measure across the top of the water heater tank, add 4 inches to your measurement and cut a square piece of foil insulation of that size. Make a circle out of that square using a round object of the right size, or do it roughly by eye. Fold it in four, cut off the point, open the piece and cut a slit from one edge to the center, to allow the top to slip around the pipe on top.

6. Cut four strips as in No. 1 above to fit the top and tape them in place, then place the top piece, tape it all around with aluminum foil tape and seal the slit.

7. Cut the leftovers into 2-inch strips and use those to insulate the pipes by going around and around them.

That's it! You have just saved hundreds of dollars over the lifetime of your hot water heater!
