Iii Fly Reel

There are many different reels for each distinct type of fishing. In this article I will cover the two major spool types: fixed spool, and revolving spool. Together with the four reels that are most widely available: bait casting reel, fly casting reel, spin-casting reel, and spinning reel.

Fixed Spool Reels - the fixed type of reel has the spool located parallel to the rod. Each time you cast, or let out the line, it "spins" off the end of the spool. As you reel the line in, the bail rotates around the spool and collects the line back onto it. The major advantage of fixed spool reels, is they can cast light weights, better than revolving spool types.

• Spin-Casting Reels - are ideal for novice fishermen, and are easier to use. Their major drawback is they have the shortest casting distance of the major reel types.
• Spinning Reels - are the most popular fixed spool reel, because they are easy to use, and they can cast significantly longer distances than a spin-casting reel.

Revolving Spool Reels - the revolving type of reel has the spool located perpendicular to the rod. When you let the line out the spool rotates, and as you are winding in the spool turns the opposite way.The major advantage of revolving spool reels, is they can cast heavier weights, better than fixed spool types.

• Bait Casting Reels - have the best drag systems, which help when you are fighting larger fish, although they are more difficult to learn how to use. You can cast more accurately than spinning reels, and with heavier weights. The revolving spool reels can cast the greatest distance.
• Fly Reels - this type of reel is highly specialized for casting using only the weight of the line. Once the is out, you pull the line off the reel by hand. Fly casting reels are by far the most difficult to learn how to use. Luckily there are some great fly fishing books, written exclusively about the subject of fly casting.

I get asked all the time, what would you recommend for beginners, who are just starting to fish. I always say start off with a spinning reel, because it is the easiest to learn. Once you have mastered the spinning reel, my next choice would be a fly fishing reel. In my opinion, you will get the most satisfaction from learning fly casting. Nothing beats the thrill of feeling a trout on the end of your line, after you have outsmarted it with your own hand tied fly.
