Hook Size

When it comes to fly fishing, people usually think of catching trout, salmon or bass. While they are the major fish for fly-fishing, you are not limited to certain fish. Of course you know that, but it seems all the hoopla is targeted toward those three.

Target Fishing the Catfish

I, as well as many other anglers, love to venture out and target different species of fish. Target fishing for a specific species will enhance the fun and enjoyment of fly-fishing.

If you haven't targeted catfish on a fly, you ought to try it. You will find catfish give a great fight and will wear your patience down. Either you or the fish will have to give in.

The Thrill of the Reel

Catfish generally are slow moving and they have a lot of strength. In many cases, they don't even know they are hooked. When they figure out they are hooked, hang on because you are in for a treat. They won't do aerial jumps but they will roll, twist and swim toward you in hopes of throwing the hook. That is when you will have to reel fast or decide to strip the line. Both will give you a challenge.

However, stripping the line will give you an advantage. If the catfish makes a run for it, you will be able to control the line better and thus not have to worry about the line breaking.

Tips for Catching Catfish with Minnow Patterns

I have had luck catching catfish on a fly by using three different flies.

• Clouser minnows patterns are good when fishing around rocks. The hook facing upward will minimize getting hung up.
• Meddler minnows when fishing on or near the bottom works well.
• Leech patterns work well on catfish.
• Fishing slow with stopping movements worked best for me.

When fishing these patterns, all have to be fished slowly and stop from time to time. It seems catfish don't like chasing, but will suck down a slow moving fly.

You can check online and get all the info you need to target catfish. By the way, catfish are delicious and easy to cook.

Choosing the Right Weight Line

Choosing the line weight for catfish will be interesting. If you are trying to catch them for fun, use lighter weight line, say 2 to 4 pounds. The lighter line will give you a real challenge. Finessing will be the key to catching those frisky catfish. Choosing heavier line will give you more of a chance landing one. Consider fishing with 6 to 12 pound line, this will improve your chances of landing the fish. Heavier line will mean more meat on the table.

Choosing the Hook Size

Hook size will have to vary with your line choice and how big a fish you want.

Just as a reminder:

• Small hooks work well on both small and big fish.
• Large hooks work on only larger fish.

I prefer sizes 8, 10, and 12.
