You will find many different types of flies that are used for trout fishing tackle when you go shopping. The question is always: "Which one is best?"

That is a difficult question to answer because it depends on so many variables. Besides the type of fly used, you will need to consider the size and the color, as well as the size of the hook.

Those things are determined by the time of year and the time of day you are fishing, what the trout are feeding on at that time, and of course the type of trout that you are attempting to catch.

5 Types of Flies For Trout Fishing

1. Dry Flies - these are dry and meant to float on top of the water, just as many insects do. They are good for fishing up or down stream. Common dry flies include mayflies, caddis flies, dried cripples, and spinners. Caution: once your fly gets too wet, it is no longer a dry fly! So be careful if you are in water that is running very fast. You will need a way to dry these flies once they become too wet for use.

2. Wet Flies - wet flies are heavier than dry flies so that they can go just below the surface of the water. In addition to being used to cast up or down stream, they are also good for fishing across the stream. Wet flies are also larger than most of the other flies.

3. Nymphs - the nymph tackle is made to resemble an insect larva. Since insect larva are almost always present for feeding, the nymph is generally a good choice. Nymphs should be kept under water so you will want to be sure to tie them to a heavier hook. You may also want to add a small weight in addition to the weight of the hook. Common nymphs used as tackle for trout fishing are mayflies, stone flies, and caddis nymphs.

4. Terrestrial Flies - these are made to mimic a flying insect that has actually fallen into the water and drowned. Examples of this type of tackle would be ants, beetles, grasshoppers, crickets, and even a small mouse.

5. Stream Flies: stream flies resemble small bait fish that trout normally eat or feed on. These might be minnows, chubs, dashers, or shiners. The flies generally imitate a small fish that is hurt. These are prime eating for the trout.
