If you fish for trout you more than likely go trout fishing in rivers (and if you don't, you should) and when trout fishing in rivers using the current to your advantage is of the utmost importance. I have been trout fishing in rivers for more than two decades and in this time have learned some tips and trick for using the current to my advantage while river fishing. In this article I will outline a few of these tips and tricks so that you can experience more trout fishing success.

When river fishing for trout it is vitally important that you are in the water with the fish, which means that wading will be necessary. To me trout fishing and wading go hand in hand, but some anglers think that wading isn't necessary when fishing in rivers. Nothing could be farther from the truth. In virtually any river in order to use the current to your advantage successfully, wading is a necessity.

With that being said, let's get down to the tips and tricks shall we?

• Your Rod Length Is Vitally Important - The length of the fishing rod that you use is extremely important to use the current to your advantage when fishing for trout. The heavier the current, the longer your fishing rod should be. Anytime that you are trout fishing in rivers you should be using an ultra light rod and reel. When the river is running high or higher than normal I use a six foot six inch ultra light fishing rod. When the river flows are "normal" to low, I use a four foot ultra light rod. To use the current to your advantage while river fishing, make sure that you use a longer fishing rod the heavier the current (or river flow) is. Using a fishing rod that matches the current flow will enable you to detect bites much easier by keeping your fishing line out of the current, thus creating drag.
• In Heavy Currents, Work The "Edges" - In heavy currents, rather than trying to fish for trout directly in the current, work the edges of the main flow where currents are not as heavy. You'll be able to see these area's by simply looking at the river you are fishing. Trout will hold in lighter current, especially below boulders or underwater debris. When fishing for trout remember, the trout don't want to waste energy "fighting" the current if they don't have to. Work the edges of the current whenever you can when trout fishing in rivers.
• Fish Live Bait Along The Bottom - When trout fishing in rivers fishing live bait (such as live worms) along the bottom is an extremely effective trout fishing technique. The goal is to have your live worm bounce or "roll" along the bottom of the river as it flows naturally with the current. With some practice, this trout fishing technique is highly effective in the current of a river.
• Position Yourself Above The Trout - Depending on the size (width) of the river that you are fishing, always do your best to position yourself above or upstream of the area of the river that you are fishing. You never want to be downstream of the trout and casting back upstream to them. This is a sure way of becoming snagged on the bottom. It also makes "feeling" your bait or lure all but impossible. When trout fishing in rivers you always want to position yourself upstream of the area you are fishing.

Use these tips and tricks to help you the next time that you are trout fishing in the flowing waters of your favorite river or stream. Rather than "fighting" the current remember to use it to your advantage as much as possible.
