And if you could learn a new sport today? A sport that does not hurt your body does not make you sweat and does not cost you a ton of money? Fly fishing is a great sport for a wide range of people and the only requirement is a fishing license.
Fly Fishing Five:
1. Fly fishing can be done in most any body of water - you do not have to travel to Colorado, Montana or Alaska to participate in this sport.
2. Fly fishing and more attention is more and more baby boomers as they retire and want try something new. To understand fly fishing, you can get books, buy or rent videos, online research and to join fishing clubs. These clubs provide information on the best places to fish as well as places to avoid, they keep you informed about new trends and equipment and offer an environment where people can tell similar stories of fish.
3. Before purchasing any equipment, take a lesson from a school of fly fishing. They equip you with waders, boots, rod and reel and discuss the basics of fishing. You learn about what flies to use and why, where and when fish pass into the next fishing hole. The tutor will show how to put line on fishing rod and how to throw your line into the water. Not only will you learn from the instructor, you will learn others in your group.
4. After your lesson, you'll have a better idea of what to buy today, so you can go fishing tomorrow. Other things (hats, fancy rods, reels high price, flies, waders, boots, etc.) can come later. For today ... per hour now - get the gist, find a body of water, standing on the bank and drop your line-in is the best way to fall in love with fishing.
5. Tune in to the beauty of it. The meditative rhythm of casting the line into a river in movement and the sounds of nature added in a sport like no other.
You can make this complicated or you can drop your line and off shore from the water. You'll be surprised how which many fish come to you as you slowly preamble along the path. Go slowly, enjoy the scenery and prepare to go up a few fish.
After you realize that you want to know more about the sport visit your local library and you'll find books to answer to all your questions. Remember to check the videos fly fishing too. You'll be amazed how much information you can get free here and now!

Waders: their Breeding, Haunts and Watchers $65 All of the Nethersole-Thompson family contribute in some measure to this book but it is Dr Desmond Nethersole-Thompson's life-long interest in waders which gives the work its exceptional quality and authority. For well over fifty years the study of waders and their behaviour has been his passion, and his great knowledge and experience are internationally recognised. There is a bonus, too, for the reader in the particular freshness and style of his writing which conveys not only his closely observed, patient study but also the joy and satisfaction he has known in watching such intriguing and beautiful birds, mainly in their Scottish habitats. The core of the book is the comprehensive accounts of the biology and behaviour of 18 species of waders in their breeding haunts (see Contents list). In addition there are chapters on waders generally, wader spacing and dispersion, the wader watchers of past and recent times, and two final chapters on new or returning waders and those pipe-dream species that, not too fancifully, may yet breed one day in these islands.Voice is one of the headings within the species accounts but there is also an appendix of sonagrams of wader songs and calls; there are tables of data and an extensive, selected bibliography. Donald Watson has provided more than a hundred drawings to complement and embellish the text and there are 32 photographs. Jacket paintings by Donald Watson |

Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders $12.99 Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders collects forty of John Gierach's finest essays on fishing from six of his books. Like all his writing, these essays are seasoned by a keen sense of observation and a deep knowledge and love of fishing lore, leavened by a wonderfully wry sense of humor. Gierach often begins with an observation that soon leads to something below the surface, which he finds and successfully lands. As Gierach says, writing is a lot like fishing. This is the first anthology of John Gierach's work, a collection that is sure to delight both diehard fans and new readers alike. To enter Gierach's world is to experience the daily wonder, challenge, and occasional absurdity of the fishing life -- from such rituals as the preparation of camp coffee (for best results, serve in a tin cup) to the random, revelatory surprises, such as the flashing beauty of a grayling leaping out of the water. Gierach offers nuggets of practical wisdom on choosing fly patterns and travel companions ("Do not go fishing with someone who is so set on being back at a certain time that he will refuse to invent a case of car trouble to keep you on the water an extra day"), vocabulary ("Expertizing means acting like an expert. Not necessarily being an expert, mind you, but acting like one"), and how to fish metaphorically ("Fly-fishing for trout is poetic; for bass it's somewhat existential; for panfish it's corny, but fun"). In rivers from Colorado to Scotland, whether alone or accompanied by his fishing buddy A.K. ("I enjoy fishing too much to risk my life at it. Death can really cut into your fishing time"), Gierach vividly captures both the subtle rhythms of the angling life and the natural world on which it depends. In "The Purist," John Gierach says of fly-fishing that it "led you inexorably to one paradox after another. The idea was to catch fish, but the best writers made it evident that it was perfectly okay not to as long as you failed to catch them with the proper grace and style." Whether he's catching fish or musing on the ones that got away, Gierach is always entertaining and enlightening, writing with his own inimitable blend of grace and style, passion and wit. |
