Compared to other outdoor clothing as used in camping, hunting or hiking, a fly fisherman will use more specialized types of articles. An angler is someone who will spend part of his time on water and the rest on land and as such there are different clothing requirements that should do well on both elements.
As new materials are developed new designs that can make up a fisherman's clothing are also introduced.
There is an old saying that a fisherman who doesn't get wet wont catch any fish. True or not, and not withstanding that you can experience great fishing from the bank, somewhere along the line you will need to get into the water - and here is where waders come into their own. This not only increases the amount of fish you catch, but is one of the more pleasurable experiences in fishing. Casting in the middle of a stream and dominating the whole area is something only an angler experiences.
Hip waders are one option for small streams but your best option is a pair of chest waders.
There are basically two types of chest waders available and these are:
1. Boot-foot waders where the wading shoe is an integral part of the waders. You just step in.
2. Stocking foot waders. For these you need a separate wading shoe that goes over the rest of the wader outfit.
The kind of fishing you do should be the deciding point on the type you choose. If your fishing expeditions tend to include back packing and long distances, then stocking foot waders, which are light, would be perfect for you. There are new designs available that have been developed over the last few years which are extremely light and easily balled up and put in a pocket of your fishing vest. The disadvantage is that you first have to put on the waders, then stockings, and finally a wading shoe.
Boot foot waders on the other hand are more bulky and heavier but the advantage is that you just put it on and are ready to go.
Waders, however well made they are, have a limited lifetime and this will depend on how often you use them and how much care you take over them. They can be good for a season or five - it all depends on the use and care. They are impervious to water, but brambles, barbed wire and other sharp points will not do them any good.
Tou should have a repair kit, but in the long run to insure they last longer, you should watch where you go, dry them immediately after using them and hang them upside down so any water will drip of.
