As with any type of fishing, the rod can be considered the most important part of your trout fishing success. This is especially true for fly fishing since the weight, length and quality of the rod all play a big part in your overall ability to catch fish. Whether you are just a beginner or an experienced angler, having some knowledge of the different types of fly rods can really give you an edge and make you more confident on the water. The rod has to feel comfortable to you and also should match the rest of your outfit, including your reel and line. Choosing a fly rod can be compared to choosing golf clubs or a tennis racket; they have to feel right in your hands, be the correct weight and length, and be of good quality so they can perform well and be trusted. Below we will discuss various types of trout fly fishing rods that I recommend and how they can help you on your next fishing adventure.
1. Sage
Sage is probably one of the most trusted brands out there today for fly rods. They are known for their durability and high quality graphite. Sage also provides a great lifetime warranty with most or all of their rods, which is not something you will find with every brand. They really stand behind their product in that way. These rods allow you to produce great speed with your line and give you an amazing amount of feel with casting. This brand can be great for anglers of all skill levels, but because of their high quality product you will find yourself paying a little more than you would for some other brands. In my opinion, Sage fly rods are well worth the money!
2. Orvis
Orvis is an excellent option for someone who is just starting out and trying to get a feel for what's out there. That being said, many experienced anglers trust Orvis as their brand as well. It's a great brand for fishing rods, and the price is right for sure. You can often find Orvis rods that are just as effective and of similar quality as Sage, but with a lower price tag. Many of the Orvis rods come with a 25 year guarantee as opposed to the lifetime guarantee you would get with Sage. I have personally tried Orvis and highly recommend using their equipment. They cast well and have a great feel to them. As with all brands, the price can vary depending on the quality of the rod. Orvis has some rods that are more expensive, but you're getting more out of it as a result.
3. G Loomis
As with these other brands I have mentioned, G Loomis is another big player in the fly rod industry. They are known to produce light rods with great strength. Some of my friends say that G Loomis rods are the best option out there, especially if you fly fish frequently or for a long period of time. Having a light weight rod can make all the difference in the world if you're on the water all day, as long as you're not sacrificing strength. The G Loomis GLX model is known for its durability and light weight graphite. It's hard to go wrong with this brand, but their warranty options generally aren't as good as with some other brands.
