The recent warm weather in Erie, Pennsylvania has opened up the streams and the steelhead trout have been moving into the area's streams in large numbers. The steelhead runs typically last until the middle of April and many large fish are now being caught on days when conditions are good. There are many tributary streams surrounding Erie, PA that receive good runs. In this article, I will cover several of them and also go into details as to the best methods for catching these big fish.

Two of the more popular streams to catch steelhead are Elk Creek and Walnut Creek in western Erie County. Both of these streams have very nice developed access areas near the stream mouth's that can be readily fished. The fishing pressure during this time of year is generally pretty heavy, however, Elk Creek, has many access areas far upstream that will allow you to get away from the crowds.

If you want to fish eastern Erie County, Twenty Mile Creek near the New York State border is a good choice. Twelve Mile Creek and Sixteen Mile Creek also receive good spring runs of steelhead.

If you are a live bait fisherman, top performing baits include: live minnows (emerald shiners and fatheads), maggots, egg sacks, and Berkeley Power Bait in sparkly fluorescent orange. Try to use as little weight as possible but if the water is murky you will need to add more split shots to get your bait down in front of the fish. Many of the seasoned steelhead fisherman like to use light lines for a better fight, however, if you want to catch and release the fish it is better to use six or eight pound test and reel the fish in quicker. If you set your drag correctly, most fish can be caught on four pound test but they are tuckered out when you finally get them in. This is not a good practice if you want to practice catch and release. An awesome steelhead hook to use is the Eagle Claw L183.

Spring steelhead in the Erie area readily impress fly fisherman and the best baits to use include Glo bugs, imitation egg sacks, imitation sucker spawn which is more yellow than steelhead spawn, hare's ear nymphs in various sizes, spring wiggler's, and other various dark colored nymphs. If you are fly fishing make sure you bring an assortment of various sizes of Glo bugs. If the streams are flowing high and murky, use a larger, brighter pattern. In clear low water conditions, white and light orange Glo bugs work well. It is a good idea to use a tippet. A 6X tippet will usually suffice but move up to an 8X tippet if the water is high. If you want to practice catch and release, #7 or #8 weight fly rods are best.

One of the best ways to catch Lake Erie steelhead at stream mouths is to use Mini Foo jigs a few feet below a small bobber. The best colors to use are black, white, and brown and make sure you tip them with a live maggot for best results. Steelhead in the Lake Erie region are commonly in the range of 6 to 10 pounds. Get ready for a hard fight!
