The Contemplative Man's Recreation - Fly Fishing
The Contemplative Man's Recreation (Izaak Walton), fly fishing is definitely an ancient angling method to catch fish with artificial lures as distinct from live or dead bait. Casting the (practically) weightless lure requires a special fishing line and a good rod.
Fly fishing tend to be done in fresh or salt water. North Americans usually distinguish freshwater fishing between coldwater species (trout, salmon, steelhead) and warm water species, notably bass. In Britain, where natural water temperatures vary less, the distinction is between game fishing for trout or salmon and coarse fishing for other species. Techniques for freshwater fly fishing also differ with habitat (lakes, small streams and big rivers.)
In fly fishing, fish are caught by employing artificial flies that are cast using a fly rod as well as a fly line. The fly line (today, nearly always coated with plastic) is heavy enough to send the fly towards the target. This is one of the main differences between fly fishing and spin or bait fishing; in fly fishing it is the weight of the line that carries the hook through the air, whereas in spin and bait fishing its the weight belonging to the lure or sinker that provides you casting distance. Artificial flies are of several types, some imitating an insect (either flying or swimming), others a bait fish or crustacean, others attractors are known to attract fish although they look like nothing in nature. Flies can be made either to float or sink, and range in size at a few millimeters to 30 cm long; most are between 1 and 5 cm.
Artificial flies are made by fastening hair, fur, feathers, or other materials, both natural and synthetic, onto a hook. The very first flies were tied with natural materials, but synthetic materials have become extremely popular and prevalent. The flies are tied in sizes, colors and patterns to match local terrestrial and aquatic insects, baitfish, or other prey attractive with the target fish species.
Fish species
Fly fishing is most renowned as a way for catching trout and salmon, but today it is also used for all kinds of species including pike, bass, panfish, grayling and carp and even marine species, like redfish, snook, tarpon, bonefish and striped bass. There are various reports of fly anglers taking unintended species along the lines of chub, bream and rudd while fishing for 'main target' species such as trout. There is a growing population of anglers whose aim is always to catch as numerous species as possible when using the fly. While using the advancement of technology and development of stronger rods and reels, larger predatory saltwater species such as wahoo, tuna, marlin and sharks became target species on fly. Realistically any fish can be targeted and captured on fly as long as the principle food source is effectively replicated by the fly itself and also the gear used is suitable
