Choosing a Fly Rod the Right Way
Trout fishing is such an enjoyable and exhilarating water sport. Whether you go for river trout, brook trout or lake trout, you will always need a fly rod to be able to catch your favorite trout. The fly rod is the angler's best partner in trout fishing. Without the proper fly rod, trout fishing is useless and the angler will go home empty handed and disappointed.
Trout enthusiasts have varying trout interests. Reasons for trout fishing also vary. Some consider it an outdoor pursuit, while others would simply want to relax. Whatever the interest or reason is, trout fishing has hooked a lot of anglers who's ultimate aim is to go home with a perfect catch. Commonly, anglers use the fly fishing method.
Here are some basic things to consider when choosing a fly rod for your trout fishing adventure.
Fly Rod Weight - By weight we do not mean how much the rod actually weighs but instead how much the line weighs. Choosing the proper line weight for the particular trout you are fishing for is essential. Line weights run from 1-14 with 1 being the lightest. The most versatility line you should use is a 5-6 as it will allow you to catch small and large trout alike.
Fly Rod Size - In terms of rod length, most fly rods are 7-10 feet long. The 7 ft. rod would be the right length for trout fishing in smaller bodies of water and at areas where bushes grow. Use the 9 ft. fly rod for larger and clear areas to get the right distance and keep the fly away from the water and so as not to spook the trout.
Rod Action - This refers to the bending capability of the rod during casting. Fast rods have tips that allows for long casting distance and trout fishing on windy days. Skilled anglers use fast action rods. Medium speed is the most preferred. Flexibility extends down the rod and the casting distance is average. Slow action rods are those that bend up to the grip. However, these types of rods are only good for trout fishing in very small creeks.
Hand Grip - Fly rods come with a variety of handle grips. Choose a fly rod that you can comfortably hold in your hand for your trout fishing.
Choosing a fly rod that perfectly suits you will help you to have fun while you are trout fishing.

Fly-Fishing for Sharks $13.99 For three years, journalist Richard Louv listened to America by going fishing with Americans. Doing what many of us dream of, he traveled from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from trout waters east and west to bass waters north and south. Fly-Fishing for Sharks is the result of his journey, a portrait of America on the water, fishing rod in hand. To explore the cultures of fishing, Louv joined a bass tournament on Lake Erie and got a casting lesson from fly-fishing legend Joan Wulff He angled with corporate executives in Montana and fly-fished for sharks in California. He spent time with fishing-boat captains in Florida, the regulars who fish New York City's Hudson River, and a river witch in Colorado. He teamed secrets of fishing and living from steelheaders in the Northwest, Bass'n Gals in Texas, and an ice-fisher in the North Woods. Along the way, he heard from one of Hemingway's sons what it was like to fish with Papa and from Robert Kennedy, Jr., how fishing changed his fife. As he describes the eccentricities, obsessions, and tribulations of dedicated anglers, he also uncovers the values that unite them. He reveals the healing qualities of fishing, how it binds the generations, how the angling business has grown, and how the future of fishing is threatened. But most of all, Fly-Fishing for Sharks is about the unforgettable characters Louv meets on the water and the stories they tell. From them, Louv learns about our changing relationship with nature, about a hidden America -- and about himself. |
