Fishing Leaders

Fishing with live bait is really pretty simple. The live bait provides natural movement so you don't have to be concerned about your presentation. All rigs for live bait consist of three things, a hook, line, and weight. However, there are many different ways you can rig your pole. Some are for fishing directly off the bottom, some will lift your bait a foot are more off the bottom, and some are for fishing near the top.

Jigs are a great way for fishing off the bottom or a foot or more from the bottom. There are two types of jigs you can use, one floats and the other one sinks. The one with a weight at the head of the jig, is designed to be fished from the bottom. This jig provides the weight and the hook. You don't need to tie on a leader which gives you more control. You will be more sensitive to the fish when it strikes. You will also have a quicker hook set because you are not using a leader. You only have one knot as opposed to other rigs that have multiple knots. This limits your chances of having a break-off. These weighted jigs will skip along the bottom if your trolling or reeling it in from the shore. Weighted jigs are, in my opinion, the easiest way to fish with live bait.

When using floating jigs, you will need a slip-on weight with a swivel. Floating jigs are good for lifting your bait off the bottom and making it more visible to the fish. You just slide on your slip-on weight and then tie your swivel on. You will then tie on a leader. The length will decide how far your bait rises above the bottom. Just remember, the longer your leader, the less control you have and it makes for a tougher hook-set. Once you tie on your leader, then you tie on your floating jig and your ready to go. This technique works great when there is vegetation and you want to get your bait above the vegetation so the fish can see it.

If you don't like fishing with jigs, and lets face it, the big head on these jigs are unnatural looking; you can use a 3-way swivel. The down side to this technique is you have to tie on two leaders. This increases your chance for break-offs. However, it is a more natural looking approach. Your first leader will tie on to the bottom ring of your 3-way swivel. This one is for your weight. The length will decide how far off the bottom you want your bait. The trailer ring is for the leader where you will tie on your hook. A good tip for choosing your hook is to use straight shank hooks, off-set hooks tend to rip the bait out of the fishes mouth when you set the hook. This rig also allows your live bait to move freely.

When you want to fish closer to the top with live bait, bobbers are the way to go. Most bobbers have two hooks, one on the top and one on the bottom. These hooks are for attaching your bobber to your line. There is a lever on the top that you push down to expose these hooks so you can secure the bobber to your line. Once you have secured the bobber to your line, you can push the lever down again to adjust the bobber. For weight, you can add split-shot sinkers down from your bobber. Then you just tie on your hook. Bobbers work great in situations where you can run into a lot of snags: like thick weed beds or rocky bottoms.
