Another beautiful day to travel. This time we went to another hundred miles inland in Bishop's Falls, anticipating a fun time at the Salmon Festival near Grand Falls. Stopped at the visitor center Grand Falls and collected information on the Salmon Festival, which is considered one of the top 100 festivals in North America. The festival lasts whole week and about 30,000 people are expected. The main attraction this year is the band of deep blue sea, as well as other popular Newfoundland rock bands. The festival features a salmon dinner followed by a 500 people dance, family day, and "Newfie" night celebrating peculiarities of Newfoundland. The cost of admission is quite high: $ 32.00 for concert, $ 25.00 for the salmon dinner.

We continued to Bishop's Falls and camped at the campsite at the base city of the Fall and the hydroelectric dam. The Exploits River is known for its fishing salmon. A fisherman is allowed only four River. For a non-resident fishing license is $ 50.00 plus guide services. It an expensive fishing. Rather catch my own fish to market.

Today we had a choice Travel North or South. Directions to South Coast Bays has been a journey of more than 150 miles. Most of the mountainous and forested area was up the Bay Area. On the south shore of Newfoundland are many fishing villages. The natives say the neighborhood is nice but not worth the trip. We took the road to the place of other Leading Tickle. The name itself nurtured our imagination (you notice I did not say tickle). A tickling according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is a narrow stretch of sea water usually between treacherous rocks or cliffs into a port. The real origin of the word is unknown. But whether the vessel was tickled to either side by the narrow passage with rocks or sailors were delighted to move to Through this last passage in the port of traitors when they arrived after being tossed over the North Atlantic. Thus, the name came to be. Leading Tickle is a fishing were we picked up fresh cod fish. The fish had been emptied and closed. Only a few bones and skin remained. They will then be salted and preserved. We have our fish before they are salted, worth £ 9 $ 2.50 pound.

Because fresh fish, we did not want to stay too long on the tickle. However, it was a short trip that we had to do: Harbor Glover. In 1879, the city has entered the Guinness Book Record for the largest giant squid ever caught. This baby was over fifty-five feet length and weighed over two and a half tons. Its tentacles were thirty-five feet long. The squid has surfaced to die. They are usually found in the depths of the Atlantic. Their only mortal enemy is the sperm whale. In the village is a center of interpretation, which attempts to depict the life of giant squid (one species is said). The exterior is a concrete replica of squid where it was brought ashore a century ago.

Today we went to Twillingate, Iceberg Alley. We found a campground in Peyton's RV Resort which has 30 amps service. The converter switched and we were back in business. Twillingate is at the end of a series of islands connected by bridges. The area is known as Iceberg Alley, but very few have traveled icebergs North this year. At the northernmost tip of the island of Long Point Lighthouse, manned by Jack May and his family. They operate an interpretive center, restaurant and gift shop. Guides show the inside of the lighthouse, which is still operational. The light is fully mechanized, but the original hand crank rotation mechanism still works. The lighthouse keeper had to reset it hourly. Always at the cutting edge are displayed in the stations of the North Atlantic. Visibility was about thirty miles today. We met a lady and her son, who await the return of her husband crab over 150 miles offshore. He had called and said he was about ten miles the coast and on his way Nothing has really changed since the old days when women navy captains await the return of their husbands the top of the widow of walks in their homes.

The water is clear. You can see different currents in the ocean by the different lines color in water. Puffins, gulls and other waterfowl abound.

At the Causeway Walter B. Elliott between New World and is Twillingate Islands the first berth, a stadium fishing operation faith. David Boyd, the owner, has been fishing for over fifty years. It shows how cod was captured and prepared for salting in the old traditional methods, before refrigeration. Everything you need to know about the industry Fishing in Newfoundland can be found here. He tried in the 60s to convince the government to ban net fishing slip by trawlers multinationals. They did not listen and cod fisheries of the North Atlantic are now like a freeway. The ocean floor has been scraped clear of the life and breeding have been destroyed, perhaps not to be fertile again for many generations. On this tour, it shows how the cod liver oil calms the waves and how the fish and seagulls go after pieces of fish that flows into the bay. During a trip to Newfoundland is a halt.

Twillingate left and stopped at Boyd's Cove Interpretation Centre Archaeological Beotuck. The Beotuck were an aboriginal tribe of hunters and gatherers who died in 1829, when the last woman dies in captivity. Because of its the little knowledge we have of this tribe survives. Archaeologist Dr. Ralph Pastore St. John's searched the Notre Dame Bay to the remains of that society. One day he finds a clearing. Not knowing what it was, he went ashore and noted the potential of an archaeological site. After a search of the sample, he found homes eleven members, including a ceremony. Thousands of artifacts, including stone arrowheads, bones of various animals and iron tools. While European fishermen were seasonal, they left the house every winter and left behind things that they did not need, for example, iron nails, hooks, Broken metal objects, etc. Beotuck recycled products, including heavy iron spikes and remodeled in the tools they could use, as spear and arrow, scrapers, etc. For over a hundred years, they lived in peace, while the French in the North and the English in the South fought them. When the English began to settle around Notre Dame Bay, the small tribe of Beotuck, no more than a thousand members, has declined and eventually became extinct, mostly due to the disease.

Archaeological excavations is accessible by a path of 1.6 km. We took it on Morgana. She went and is doing its best to walk any distance. But the heat and length made it impossible, especially with the proliferation of annoying mosquitoes and black flies piranha, who wanted to enjoy the buffet of our body, even if we were treated.

From there we began to take the loop, Route 330, near Hamilton Sound. We cross many small villages, where many residents have the same surname. We decided to camp in Musgrave Harbour. Judgement to the east were the Wadham Islands and north of Fogo Island.

Musgrave Harbour is in the Centre Banting Interpretation. Sir Frederick Banting, co-founder of insulin, died in a plane crash here. The wreck and a replica of his plane are exposed.

Drove up the coast of Newton, the Venice of Newfoundland, because the city is built around nine tickles (Remember?) Connected by bridges. Here the family lived Balfour, a prosperous family of sailors. Since the 1960s, they allow tourists to visit their property to see what life was like in those days. The family still lives and part of the year there. The Centre consists of two houses, one built in the 1870s, which housed about thirty people, the other a design of Queen Anne, built in 1904. Both houses have the original furniture and memories of the family. ship employment Balfour was caught in a hurricane a year and ended in Scotland. He turned lemons into lemonade, winning an engine of Calvin and marble vanities. All hands were saved. The Centre plays an interview with CBC Captain Balfour, who is fascinating in itself. The Centre has costumed Docents who directed the different characters in the school house, a stage of cod, and a replica of the ship hunting seals. One of the buildings is also used for a theater where plays are performed regularly. Newton itself is very picturesque.

Drove a few miles more Greenspond, another fishing village, which was once the capital of this part of Newfoundland. The courthouse was restored in 1904 and costumed docents give tours of the building. There is minimal parking, especially on Saturdays, when everyone seems to be shopping at the local fishing fish plants. This strain put a lot on the baby, trailer, and our personal relationship.

Our next stop was Gander, once one of the busiest airports the world. All Trans-Atlantic flights had to stop here once for refueling. A week ago, the Concorde made an emergency landing here, because did not have enough fuel to reach New York from London. London has experienced a heat wave with temperatures around 100 ° F. After refueling the plane took off. The condensed fuel at high altitude, do not have enough reach to NYC. The only plane at the airport today was the U.S. Air Force transport.

Near the airport are the ruins the city at the time of the Second World War. Nothing remains except the streets and few signs.

Just outside of town is Silent Witness Memorial to the Victims of plane crash Dec. 12, 1985 of the 101st Airborne troops flying home from a peacekeeping mission on the Sinai Peninsula, landed in Gander. He was a crew change and refueling, but on takeoff, the ship was crushed and malfunctioned, leaving no survivors. The cause is still unknown.

Another fact about Gander is their people. After 9 / 11, when Airports were closed in the U.S., many aircraft, which had been bound United States, landed in Gander. The people of Gander and the surrounding area is came to the airport and invited the passengers into their homes. It's really the spirit of hospitality of Newfoundland.

Our Botwood next step is where we spent the night on the old WWII amphibious Air Force Base. Even before the Second World War, was Botwood a major airport. The first transatlantic flight of a commercial aircraft of a Clipper landed here in 1937. This was the advent of air service luxury across the Atlantic. This remained after the Second World War, when aircraft from the sea went the way of the horse and buggy. One PBY Catalina aircraft is in port today as a reminder of the heritage of the city. In the port is an island with a causeway leading to it, which housed defensive weapons during the war.

Conduit in Glen Falls-Windsor and Mary visited the Museum in March, dedicated to one of remaining members of the Nation Beothuck. It was interesting and insisted on finding the Beothuck in the valley of the River Exploits Cartwright, Buchan, and Peyton later. At this time the nation was dying from the disease introduced by Europeans and many disagreements between the two cultures.

Behind the museum is a recreated village showing different types of buildings used Beothuck.

A little further on is a museum of logging, included in the price of admission to the Museum Mary Mars. This is one of the highlights of our trip to Newfoundland. The museum is a reconstructed camp loggers in the 1920s, where 40 to 100 men cut down trees for wood pulp to the mills. The camps were generally used for two years before moving to another location. Besides the building housing the office of the foreman, cooks and kitchen quarters, and the dormitory, there were construction Forging and storage facility. The applicant has been working to refine the axes and saws every day. He worked at night while the cutters of sleep. There were some interesting names for their various equipment: quick piss, pot bitch, ass reamer, etc. Each has been a important in the logging camp.

Cutting in general continued in recent weeks in August until the fall of snow. Newspapers have been transported to the river or the river itself, which has been frozen. When spring came, they were driven down the river to the mill. Finally there was a small cleanup crew to find the dispersion of wood to the River. Wages for the cup was piece, depending on the number of son cut. Other jobs were paid wages.

Today we went to the Baie Verte Peninsula (Green Bay) to see the mines and especially Indian Dorset excavation of soapstone to Fleur de Lys at the tip of the peninsula. On the way we passed a strip mine asbestos, which was closed for a number of years. Mother Nature is being take over, forming a lake at its center.

A Fleur de Lys is the site of the Indian heritage of Dorset about 6,000 years ago. They pre-shaped bowls, lamps and other objects in the soft rock and then removed from the site. The tools have been used for other rock hammers chisels and scrapers. Soapstone, which not feel like soap has properties that held the heat and was used for cooking pots and oil lamps. Talc is a part of the rock. sites Today there are very few soapstone. A few scultpurers use them for decorative purposes.

We made a detour to Tilt Cove. This was once a thriving city of more than two thousand people. Today is the ghost town of only five families. The area is beautiful and isolated, Cove overlooking Notre Dame Bay is surrounded by steep hills.

Went hiking today, a beautiful sunny day. The first trail we went to was the noise of the Falls Creek Trail, where the water falls is eight hundred feet of the mountain. It was a short trail, only one kilometer in length, but all the stairs. Morgana came with, but fatigue on ¾ of the way.

After This leads us to a short trail hike Alexander Murray, about eight kilometers long, most of them go to summit of a peak of 1,000 feet. More than 1,200 stairs brings you to the summit. There is also a little detour in Corner Brook Falls, only 205 steps in each meaning. The falls seem to come out of the mountain, rather than falling on the mountain. The view from the top of the Green Bay area are beautiful. Along the way are two other falls Water, one of them named Gull Falls Brook. A hike, which was said to take only three hours, took nearly five hours instead. We returned totally exhausted.

John and Maggie Pelley are Geriatric Gypsies. Both of us are retired from the rat race of working. We are full-time RVers, who ran away from home. We began our travels on the East Coast and, like the migrating birds, seek the warmth of the seasons. No more shoveling snow in Chicago. We have discovered volunteering with the National Park System. During our travels we have found that each town has a story to tell: some are more interesting than others. Both of us enjoy good listening music as we go. John has a CD he has recorded of Native American flure music. We have learned that RVing has a learning curve. We want to pass on some advice the help others avoid this trecherous curve. Life is an adventure. We are living it to the utmost.
