Turkeys are large birds with bodies measuring 3.6 to 3.8 feet with a wingspan of 4.1 to 4.8 feet. They weigh between 5 and 19 pounds. There are three species of turkey: the Wild Turkey, the Ocellated Turkey and the Domestic Turkey. The domestic turkey descends from the wild turkey. Wild turkeys are native to North America while Ocellated turkeys are native to the Yucatán Peninsula. Wild Turkeys are most readily found in forests, but they also live in grasslands and swamps.
People can usually tell the difference between a male and a female (hen) turkey in 2 ways. The male (a tom) is larger and his feathers are brighter and fuller than the smaller drabber colored female. Male turkeys have bronze wings with areas of red, gold, green, copper, or purple iridescence. Because of the males brighter colors, most people will use them when picking pictures, crafts, or plush stuffed animals for holiday display's. Females have dull coloring in brown and gray. Male turkeys have large fan shaped tails with dark coloring. These tails are used to solicit mates. Males also differ from females in that they have coarse tufts of hair called beards on their breasts. Another way to spot a male is the waddle on their throat and the red head.
Turkeys forage for food on the ground. They eat nuts, seeds, berries, grasses and insects. You can normally find turkeys eating early in the morning and then again in the late afternoon to early evening. Turkeys will also sometimes eat small reptiles and amphibians like lizards and snakes. Due to their wide-ranging diet, turkeys can grow to large populations in small areas.
Wild turkeys are good fliers and use their cunning flight skills to escape from hazard. Because turkeys are such cautious birds, they will fly or run at the slightest sign of danger. They will generally fly close to the ground for about a quarter of mile or less. Wild turkeys do best in areas where they can find perches to escape or watch for danger, therefore they like open forest or savannas with widely spaced trees. Domestic turkeys are usually unable to fly, though littler lighter turkeys can normally fly short distances. Once a domestic turkey starts to put on much weight, it no longer has the ability to fly.
Turkeys have diverse sounds for communicating with others of its kind. Some of their sounds include gobbles, purrs, clucks, cackles and kee kees. Males use gobbles to let females know they're there. Females will make yelping sounds to give out their locations to males. Young males may also be heard making a yelping sound but, it is very uncommon in fully grown toms. You will seldom, if ever, hear a female gobble.
Male turkeys are like males in many other species and will mate with all the females the can. To attract a mate they will puff out their feathers, spread out their tails feathers and drag their wings in a manner known as strutting. Once a female has mated, she looks for a place to make her nest. She will then lay 4 - 17 eggs, one per day. Then the eggs are incubated for 28 days or more. Baby turkeys called poults and can leave the nest in 12 - 24 hours.
At the beginning of the 20th century turkey numbers decreased quickly and were nearly depleted. Efforts were made to protect the surviving turkeys and boost breeding. The numbers went up in the United States and turkeys were brought in to Canada. It is estimated that the wild turkey population is now at around 7 million.
Although you seldom see turkeys in the hot topic animal news, they are a very important part of the environment and our way of life. Thanks for taking the time to read our turkey tid bit.

Ocellated Woodcreeper $68.51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Ocellated Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus ocellatus) is a species of bird in the Dendrocolaptinae subfamily of the ovenbird family (Furnariidae). Ocellated Pipefish $58.94 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Ocellated pipefish, also known as Orangespotted pipefish, Corythoichthys ocellatus, is a pipefish of the family Syngnathidae, found in the Western Pacific Ocean at depths up to 12 m. Its length is up to 10 cm. Ovoviviparous, the male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail. Pipefishes or pipefishes (Syngnathinae) are a subfamily of small fishes, which with the seahorses form the family Syngnathidae. Pipefish look like straightbodied seahorses with tiny mouths. The name is derived from the peculiar form of their snout, which is like a long tube, ending in narrow and small mouth which opens upwards and is toothless. The body and tail are long, thin, and snakelike. They have a highly modified skeleton formed into armored plating. This dermal skeleton has several longitudinal ridges, so that a vertical section through the body looks angular, not round or oval as in the majority of other fishes.
