Humans have adorned themselves since the beginning of time wearing garlands of flowers, bracelets of woven grass, shells, and stone. It has been said that the urge to adorn oneself is to pronounce our individuality. Body decoration proclaims cultural and personal identity yet at the same time carries stories and memories, often these stories and memories are linked to ancient symbolic tales. Equally myths are symbolic tales of the distant past, often primeval times that concern the origin and nature of the universe. Throughout history, artists, writers, musicians and dancers have been inspired by myths and legends and have given them visual form. In that same spirit of transformation jewellery can be designed to carry the energy of old tales, to hold certain characteristics thereby becoming talismans or amulets. This happens because everything around us is vibrating, colours, stones, metals, fabrics, all vibrate at specific frequencies - some lower, some higher. What's more, many objects will absorb the frequencies of what has been around them and then radiate this frequency back to us. Wood, metals and even stone, for example are able to take in and carry the vibrations of the people and events around them. Many talismans come from predatory animals for example a leopard's claw, shark's tooth, or eagle's feather and are believed to endow the wearer with some of the qualities of the animal from which it came. Crystals and gemstones have also been used as amulets and talismans for thousands of years and each stone is believed to carry with it a meaning or healing properties, for example Rose Quartz is said to endow the wearer with feelings of love, Amber is worn for its life giving properties and Sardonyx is used as a protection grid by placing it at each corner of the house to prevent crime and misfortune.

Body adornment can also be created out of a 'rite of passage' such as a friend of mine after finishing a university course celebrated by buying herself a piece of jewellery that signified her achievement. A young girl or boy who transform into young man and woman may pierce or tattoo certain parts of their body in recognition of the change (not all do this as a conscious decision) Marking or adorning the body in some way after a major life change is an ancient tradition still in existence today like in some parts of India the bindi a small red dot placed on the woman's forehead was developed for a wedding ritual. The red colour is meant to bring prosperity to her home; the dot makes her the keeper of welfare and gives out the message that this woman is no longer available.

So perhaps if you are choosing a piece of jewellery, you may like to think about the significance and purpose of wanting it and ask yourself the following questions:

Is it to celebrate or acknowledge some important event in your life?

Does the symbology of the jewellery impart an important statement that you carry?

Does the piece have a past? And if so what story does it tell?

What does the piece feel like to hold or wear?

How do you feel when you place the object on you?

If it contains semi-precious stones what meaning do they transmit?

I believe you are what you wear and what you wear carries certain qualities and properties that eliminate outward and inward.
