In the spring of 1980 I read an article in Fly fisherman magazine about crane fly larva. In the article, the author was talking about how the trout in the Big Horn River went absolutely crazy for the crane fly larva. At that time in my fly fishing career, I didn't know much about crane flies, but I did know that I wanted to catch big trout and if the crane fly larva would help me to do that then I was going to learn all about it.
Most people when they see a crane fly think it's a giant mosquito, which it is not. However, it does look like one. Crane flies are members of the midge family the order of two winged Diptera. Trout do feed on the adults. However, the adult stage of the fly's life cycle is very short lived. The larva does not emerge in the water the way other aquatic insects do. Trout feed on adults, just as they would feed on any other terrestrial insects. Crane fly larva, are very important, as a trout food, and trout will take them at every opportunity. On many occasions, I have personally observed a big fish move from his holding position to swim clear across the stream to take my crane fly larva imitation. I know of no other fly that will cause a big trout to respond in such a manner. That's why I call my pattern a "BFM"; big fish mover.
As aquatic insects, the larvas are huge. They are found in every river system in the United States. Most species are from about 5/8's to 1 inch long with the Giant Crane fly Larva (Tipula abdominalis) almost 2 inches in length and as thick as a pencil. Compared to mayfly or a caddis fly "nymph", a crane fly larva is a meal in itself. Crane fly larva are larger than most species of stone fly nymphs, or even dragon fly nymphs. As a matter of fact, I can't think of an aquatic "nymph" that is larger than the Tipula abdominalis.
The Crane fly has three stages to it's life: larva, pupa and adult. Most of their life is spent in the larva stage. It is when the larva gets ready to undergo metamorphosis from larva to pupa that it moves from its hiding place under the rocks to the waters edge to emerge like a butterfly from a cocoon out of the muddy silt. The larva is not an agile swimmer preferring to crawl along the bottom to the shores' edge to "hatch"; however, when they become dislodged from a flash flood or during runoff, they will flatten out like a leech to swim to shore.
The larva can be found under melon size rocks in riffles of slow moving water close to the waters edge. Generally, you will not find them under rocks in fast moving water or for that matter, in water that is very deep. In high concentrations, you may find a dozen or more under a single rock! In May of 1986 I was fishing on the Wind River in the Wind River Canyon upstream from Thermopolis, Wyoming. I turned over a few rocks at the waters edge looking for crane fly larva and found enough to fill a quart jar half full! I can tell you on that day the trout were definitely feeding on them.

Ocular Larva Migrans $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Ocular larva migrans is the ocular form of the larva migrans syndrome that occurs when toxocara canis larvae invade the eye. They may be associated with visceral larva migrans. Unilateral visual disturbances, strabismus, and eye pain are the most common presenting symptoms. The disease presents with an eosinophilic granulomatous mass, most commonly in the posterior pole of the retina. The granulmatous mass develops around the entrapped larva, in an attempt to contain the spread of the larva. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. In Caddis Wood $9.99 A tender, nuanced portrait of a timeworn marriage Told from the alternating perspectives of a husband and wife, In Caddis Wood explores the competing rhythms of romantic love, family life, and professional ambition, refracted through the changing seasons of a long marriage. Beneath the surface, affecting their collective future, beats the resilient and endangered heart of nature. Hallie’s career as a poet has always come second to her family, while Carl’s life has been defined by his demanding and internationally acclaimed work as an architect. The onset of a debilitating illness and the discovery of Hallie’s cache of letters from another man set Carl reeling and cause him to question not only his previously unshakable belief in himself but also his faith in Hallie’s devotion. As the memories multiply and the family gathers at their longtime summerhouse in the woods of Wisconsin, Hallie and Carl’s grown-up daughters offer unexpected avenues toward forgiveness and healing. With warmth and generosity, Mary François Rockcastle captures the way that the aging mind imbues the present with all the many layers of the past as she illuminates the increasingly unbreakable bonds borne of a shared life. |
