Alaska is so big that most great fly fishing is reached by float plane. You can get close to outstanding fly fishing by commercial air travel flying into Bethel or King Salmon, Alaska but you still need a float plane. That is why lodges are so important in Alaska fly fishing. They act as a hub for float planes to land and take-off, allowing the fly fisherman to reach prime waters either for a day or two or a float trip for a week. Alaskan rivers and streams are not what they once were. Lack of wildlife management of some waters has left them "fished-out". Other waters have remained good because of catch and release policy put in effect by guides.
The west coast of Alaska has remained strong because of the constant run of salmon that would die anyways. Opportunities to catch Coho salmon are excellent in the Alagnak River and Moraine Creek followed by rainbow trout. The Coho run in August and the rainbow trout have the river and the fall hatches to themselves in September. For flies to carry with you, under water streamers work well particularly leeches, salmon have the instinct to protect the redd so they strike at anything that threatens their reproduction so leeches and egg-sucking leeches work great. Salmon also strike at anything that annoys them so some of the bright color salmon flies might come in handy.
Fish the streamers on the swing and dead drift the egg-sucking leeches. The rainbow trout also will hit an egg-sucking leech on the drift as an opportunity for a tasty meal. You should also carry a dark muddler variation preferably a cone-head as well as a couple of sculpins in green or brown and a flesh fly or two. For dry flies caddises are generally all you need. A standard caddis, a dark caddis, a caddis CDC, and an elk hair caddis should cover your needs. You might bring a couple of Royal Humpy flies and a frog imitation. These are flies you probably own already. One item I forgot to mention is Glo bugs. Some peach, yellow, and pink will be all you need. The peach most resembles the Alagnak salmon roe so more of those than the others.
Guides on float trips usually carry the hot fly of the week so don't worry about being left out when the fish begin to feed. Alaska fly fishing is isn't as wide spread as it used to be but in certain regions there are still premier rivers and streams. The rivers are long and access is by boat so a guided trip is preferred way to experience it.
