The calendar is an important tool in common everyday activity, however with a little imagination, it can communicate much more than a mere list of "to-do" items.

Why Bind Your Own Calendar?

The calendar is applicable for all practical purposes - but that doesn't mean it can't be sentimental. A home made calendar puts the entire year on a whole new level and places a personal touch on every day. And though it may seem like the whole world is consumed with outside interests, no one can resist the charm and personal effort put into an individually thought-out calendar. The whole idea is becoming more popular over the years mainly because we just don't see enough of it.

Experience teaches us however that personalised calendars make wonderful and sentimental gifts. Special care must be taken then to give them a professional appearance. While you'll want your calendar to make an impression, that impression should be a good one! So this particular article is for those who want create their own calendars as gifts for friends and family or those who want to make an exclusive company calendar privy to employees only.

Necessary Materials

With more people making personal calendars you'll find a number of suppliers offering calendar binding packages or kits. These include all the necessary tools and accessories needed to bind your own calendar. A typical calendar kit will include a coil or spiral wire binding machine to punch the holes, a thumbcut punch used for cutting the semicircle in the top of the calendar, and a supply of binding wires and hangers to secure the pages and hang the calendar.

To start, understand that binding calendars is relatively easy with the use of a thumbcut punch, 11" pieces of pre-cut twin loop wire, a calendar hanger, and a plastic comb or wire binding machine (the wire binding machine appears to be the preference).

Assuming that you've already printed the pages of your calendar and arranged them in their appropriate order, use the thumbcut punch to make a small hole in the top middle portion of the document. But don't punch all the remaining holes of the calendar just yet - not with this tool! The wire binding machine will create the additional holes that your calendar needs with its twin loop wire.

Making The Cut

Adjust the appropriate settings on the wire binding machine to punch holes that are fit for a calendar. Check to make sure that the machine's dies won't punch holes on the calendar's outer edges. Centre the pages together so that each side of the calendar has an even number of holes and then proceed to punch.

After punching the required holes, place the pieces of 11" pre-cut twin loop wire into the calendar either by hand or with your machine's wire holder. Then add the calendar hanger. The calendar hanger is a piece of wire that holds the calendar straight when hung. You'll want to place the hanger inside the twin loop wire and carefully move the entire assembly to the machine where the wire closer finishes the job.

The End Result

The finished product should look as though it came directly from a publishing company, only more charming and more meaningful. Some of the dearest gifts come from the toil of our own hands, even if we use modern technology to help. After all, an interesting aspect of the calendar is its creativity, and there's probably no better way to express that creativity than with your own artistry and expert binding skills.
