You hear a lot about sustainable fishing today. In years gone by, there was no worry about fish stocks running out or damage to the environment. Today, we realize what happens when we overfish a species or damage the environment through fishery practices. More fishermen are trying to work sustainably now, protecting the environment and the fish populations they rely on to make a living.
Seafood is labeled sustainable if they reproduce quickly at a young age. Sardines and anchovies do this, and are considered sustainable species. Orange Roughy, however, does not reproduce until late in life. This means that a good portion of this species that is caught by fishermen have not reproduced yet. This cuts down on the general population and in time, could make the species extinct unless fishing is reduced.
What Retailers Are Doing
Because of the importance of sustainable fishing, many restaurants are starting to offer sustainable seafood options on their menus. Some restaurants even specialize in it. Some seafood markets are looking doing the same thing.
What Consumers Can Do
There are several websites online offering guidelines for consumers so they know what seafood to avoid and what seafood is sustainable. If the demand drops for unsustainable seafood, the industry will move on to sustainable species. Recommendations are updated periodically and are divided by region. Do not be afraid to ask your fishmonger whether their seafood is sustainable or not. They should know where their seafood comes from and how it is caught. If they avoid the question, you may want to shop elsewhere.
Consumers can print out these guidelines and take them along when they shop for seafood. An example would be to avoid species like Atlantic Cod, Grouper, Russian King Crab, and Monkfish. They or their habitat is at risk due to fishing practices. Better choices would be flounder, lingcod, Atlantic lobster, or prawns, though they are still showing a moderate risk. The best choices would include Alaskan King Crab, Arctic char, anchovies, clams, or hake.
Some farmed fish are recommended and others are not. Farmed catfish, US farmed shrimp and farmed oysters are great choices, while farmed salmon should be avoided. Apply these guidelines to what is available in your area to help keep fishing sustainable.
Many species can actually be substituted for others that are not sustainable. Striped bass, for instance, is a well-managed species that can be substituted for rock cod, red snapper, orange roughy, grouper, or black sea bass. The flavor and texture of the meat is very similar to those other species.
Eating fish at the top of the food chain can increase the levels of mercury, PCBs, and other pollutants in the fish. Since these pollutants are usually stored in fatty tissue, try grilling or broiling them to let the fats and juices drain away from the fish, taking those pollutants with them. Deep frying can actually seal those pollutants inside. Eating cooked fish instead of raw fish can also reduce the pollutant levels by up to 30%.
It is important to keep our seafood sustainable if we want to keep enjoying it in years to come. When you look for seafood restaurant Los Angeles, you can see that some are trying to be sustainable in their seafood choices.
