Aerobatic manoeuvres are flight paths that place an aircraft in unusual positions. These manoeuvres are commonly seen in air shows, and dog fights. The five basic manoeuvres of aerobatics are:
• LINES are a straight flight path that an aircraft takes. This starting manoeuvre can be horizontal or vertical.
• LOOPS are similar to a roller coaster loop but in the air. This move can be done with the plane starting from a right side up position or from an upside down position.
• ROLLS are where the aircraft spins on its side while staying on the flight axis. Simply speaking, it's a movement similar to roasting a marshmallow.
• SPINS are similar to a downward spiralling action. Imagine a roll only going to a downward direction.
• HAMMERHEAD imitates the action of hammering a nail. The aircraft flies up and down in a vertical manner coming from a straight horizontal path. Similar to writing the capital letter "L" in the air. Variations of this manoeuvre occur when the aircraft exits abruptly from the middle of the vertical fly path.
These manoeuvres were compiled by a man into a set of figures, each depicting the process of completing each move. This compilation became so popular since it gave pilots an easier way of learning manoeuvres and remembering them. This is the Aresti Catalogue. Spanish aviator Colonel Jose Luis de Aresti Aguirre designed this catalogue that comprises of geometric shapes and numbers. The catalogue showed precisely how a manoeuvre is flown that to date it is used as the standard document of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI).
Now on to the top manoeuvres in the Aerobatics field:
1. Immelman Turn. This is a movement that starts from a horizontal straight with the nose pitching up to perform a half loop then finishing off with a barrel roll to exit.
2. Cuban 8. This is done by starting with a straight line path then on to 2/3 of a loop. The plane exits the loop upside down, then connect another 2/3 roll with a roll of 180 degrees.
3. Half Cuban Eight.
4. Inverted Half Cuban Eight
5. Inverted Loop is similar to the loop but the airplane enters the loop flying in an upside down position.
