DigitalRev's Canon EOS 7D Hands-On Review
The Canon EOS 7D may have been released for quite a while and placed itself solidly in the professional APS-C market and smelled strongly like a Nikon D300S killer. Let's look at the camera itself to get a better idea why the Canon EOS 7D has been a success full frame since it released.
Build
The Canon EOS 7D comes with a magnesium alloy body that is similar to that of the Canon 5D Mark II and delivers the ruggedness that you would expect from a pro-grade DSLR. Strong on the outside, the 100% view of the pentaprism viewfinder tells you that the build quality seeps in all the way. The intelligent viewfinder also displays more shooting information than any previous DSLR. The Canon 7D waits in at 820g and measures 148.2 (W) x 110.7 (H) x 73.5mm (D) in dimensions.
So what if it's not as tough as a 1-series? It's compact, portable and rugged enough to take anywhere!
Design
The traditional Canon EOS design is clearly hallmarked in the Canon EOS 7D. There are some extra buttons on the camera and some changes to the existing buttons to deliver better access to features but overall, someone used to shooting any of the EOS DSLRs will find the 7D very straightforward. The 3-inch (920k dots) is really fast becoming a standard for new DSLRs, so no surprise there. One of the things that stand out with the Canon 7D is that it is the only single digit EOS series to have a built-in flash. This clearly defines the Canon EOS 7D as a pro body camera that also caters for the semi-pros and enthusiasts.
Looks and feel smart enough that even a noob will know that this camera is laden with features.
User Friendliness
With the introduction of the Quick [Q] Menu button and the M-func button, accessing different functions of the camera has become a lot easier. Good thing too because with the extra functions thrown in, you may find yourself going through the menu more than once. The up side? Once you are versed with the different functions, changing settings should be a breeze. You'll also find that the inclusion of the Auto and CA mode will make this camera easy to use if you ever need to loan it to friends or family (shakes his head furiously!). The direct access to Live View and Video shooting with the dedicate button and switch made everything a lot more tidy as well.
Nice touches all round but given the numerous features on this baby, expect to take a while before you start really appreciating the controls.
Performance
Where to start? There are so many improvements in this camera we have to restrain ourselves from delivering a thesis on this camera. First, Speed. It's fast at 8fps without the need of battery grips to give it the extra boost. It's got a dual "DIGIC 4" to make sure that processing keeps up to what you throw its way and of course, you get HD for almost 30mins of footage. OK, it's only 29mins 59secs to be precise but that's worlds apart from the mere 5mins from the disappointing Nikon D300S.
The performance doesn't just end there... with a new 63-zone dual layer metering sensor and a new 19 cross-type AF points focusing system, the Canon EOS 7D is set to take things to higher levels. From our test, we found everything very responsive and encountered no problems. We can only hope that Canon has got it completely right this time so we won't have to hear about possible future AF issues.
Canon has worked really hard to stuff as much performance as they could into the 7D's body. We liked what Canon did and we are ready to show it with full marks!
Innovation
There are times when all you are getting is more of the same... maybe more megapixels, a faster burst speed... well, those things are all to the go but it doesn't always get you excited or help you that much. Now if you are one of those photographers who need to ensure his camera is level, either on a tripod of hand held, the 2-Axis Electronic Level feature is god sent. When you have it activated on the LCD, the fighter plane type HUD display makes this dull job a lot more exciting. From now on, you will know exactly if your camera is level or not and with a lot less hassle.
Another feature we like to mention here is the Integrated Speedlite Transmitter. Maybe not a first for all DSLRs like the levelling feature but definitely still a first for the EOS cameras. Allowing you to remotely control most of the Speedlite flashes, this is a definitely a useful feature especially for those situation when you find yourself needing to remove your external flash for alternate placement to achieve that perfect shot.
Other improvements are of course the new focusing and metering systems already mentioned earlier in this article.Maybe not useful for everyone but kudos to Canon for really making the Canon EOS 7D probably the best APS-C sized sensor DSLR in the market.
Image Quality
Any camera can look good on paper but the real factor in what makes it a great camera at the end of the day is its image quality. With a new 18 megapixels APS-C sized sensor, we are delivered a camera which produces high resolution images in fine details. During our photo shoot, we shot with both a Canon EOS 7D and Canon 5D Mark II and we found the results very much on par. While the 5D Mark II does deliver better noise handling and a better depth of field due to its sensor, you can depend on big improvements over the 50D. This advantage over the 50D is significant given that we are seeing more resolution on the 7D with the same sensor size.
For a more controlled test under different ISO settings, we took the 7D and set it up with focal length at 135mm, Aperture Priority at f/11, White Balance at 6000k and spot focusing (centre). The Canon 7D delivers brilliant image quality and is easily the best APS-C DSLR in the Canon EOS range. Comparable to the 5D Mark II, you can't ask for more outside the 1-series.
Our Conclusion:
You can forget about how much better the Canon EOS 7D is compared to its competition. In fact, once you have it in your hands, you may well forget about everything other than how good this camera is and how much it can do. Perfect for those who demand more and shoots sports, action or street where responsiveness and speed are essential. There will be a lot of photojournalist getting this one without a doubt. Be careful if you are going to try it, you may not want to let it go.
Total Score: 27/30

The Shooting Script $6.99 Following his critically acclaimed novel The Cutting Room, Laurence Klavan returns with The Shooting Script. Establishing shot: New York City, present day. Zoom in on a run-down tenement building, somewhere west of Times Square, the home of Roy Milano, a thirtyish, divorced typesetter who lives for the movies. In fact, by pursuing the legendary uncut print of Orson Welles’s The Magnificent Ambersons, Roy has become something of a minor celebrity among the fellow misfit film fanatics he caters to in his homemade newsletter, Trivial Man. But there’s nothing trivial when Roy’s old rival Abner Cooley shows up with a check in his hand and the words “Someone is trying to kill me” on his lips. With his mother ailing, Roy needs the money as badly as Cooley needs someone to head off a trigger-happy stalker who’s determined to put both him and his controversial new screenplay into permanent turnaround. And though Roy does his best, like many a private eye before him, he quickly finds his head turned by an enticing distraction. Not a femme fatale, but a flick. Roy is all but powerless to resist an e-mail from a mysterious fan that lures him with the promise of an elusive treasure as fiercely sought after by the celluloid cognoscenti as the Ark of the Covenant was by Indiana Jones. It’s Jerry Lewis' famous unreleased drama, The Day the Clown Cried. But when he arrives at a rendezvous too late to save a dying man, Roy realizes he’s stumbled into a dangerous race to possess a piece of cinema history. To catch up, he’ll have to match wits with a rogues’ gallery: a bored and bitter superstar comedian, a hot-shot producer turned drugged-out has-been, a ferocious German actor who likes to role-play off-camera, a mercurial director with a scary sense of humor, and a hard-bitten cop who’s mad about movies. Meanwhile, Roy will be tempted by the wiles of three fetching females–and tormented by a single-minded psychopath with more faces than Lon Chaney. He’ll even go on location, pursuing and being pursued from the mansions of the Hamptons to the harbors of Maine, the boulevards of L.A. to the canals of Amsterdam. No one’s ever gone to this much trouble just to see a movie. But for Roy, the reward far outweighs the risk. And a chance to glimpse the Big Picture might just be worth coming face-to-face with the Big Sleep. From the Hardcover edition. |

Shooting Script $6.99 Fresh from solving the murder of a fashion magnate’s wife in Live at 10:00, Dead at 10:15 , TV newsmagazine producer Sonya Iverson returns in Shooting Script , another luxurious thriller from Elsa Klensch. Once again working on a "puff piece," this time about the opening of a new luxury spa headed by the third and youngest wife of Errol Swanson, former head of Sonya’s own network, Sonya decides to put her frustration to good use. She’s an investigative reporter—so she’ll investigate. And there’s plenty of dirt to dig. For one thing, the head honchos at the network all seem scared of Errol—even Donna Fuller, Sonya’s boss and a crusading journalist, treads softly where Errol is concerned. Rumors claim that Donna and Errol had an affair, and Errol’s made a heavy-handed pass at Sonya. Then there are the wives. Wife #1, Joan, is eating herself to death and trying desperately to wrest control of her family toy business away from her supposedly retired ex-husband. Craig, her son with Errol, disappeared a decade ago and is presumed dead; his twin sister, Christy, is mentally and emotionally unstable and has been the family scapegoat for years. Wife #2, Margot, is a successful fashion designer who still lives in fear of Errol’s notoriously violent temper. He’s got his hooks into her business too, and the loans are due. Margot brings a gun to the spa, to protect herself and her charming son, Tomas. Tomas, a budding fashion model, wants his father to accept him, but his homosexuality disgusts Errol, and the two men have never had a civil conversation. Wife #3, Lara, seems to be full of love and human kindness. She’s engineered a family reunion along with the spa opening in an attempt to reconcile her husband with his wives and children before her own baby is born. Learning of Errol’s past cruelties, Lara does her best to soften her hard-headed husband, but his unusual sexual demands have begun to wear on her soul. Lara has secrets of her own, a dark past that may soon be exposed. Rounding out the family gathering are Errol’s Aunt Tracey, who knows where the bodies are buried—perhaps literally—and Sonya’s fellow reporter Frank O’Neill, who has a deeply personal connection to Lara and who is preparing a book-length expose of Errol Swanson. When Errol is found, shot to death while tied to the bed he and Lara shared, the morning after a family dinner marked by vituperation and violence, local police have an abundance of suspects. But Sonya is already several steps ahead of the official investigation. She’s determined to find out who killed the mogul . . . and get her scoop on the air. |

Fatigue Shooting Drills (DVD) $39.99 With Kevin Sutton,Montverde Academy Men's Basketball Head Coach,NIKE Skill Academy InstructorTo become a great shooter, players must concentrate and execute when fatigue begins to set in. Coach Sutton uses his own players in this on-court session where they are pushed physically and mentally. Each drill requires players to be shot ready, react to situations, use proper technique and maintain total concentration. The workout opens with a dynamic stretching routine that combines stretching with ball handling. In the full court, Sutton introduces 11 drills that focus on stretching and concentration. The Power 45 drill demands communication and teamwork, as well as shooting and footwork. Each player shoots 45 shots from three spots on the floor. Before transitioning to the next drill, players shoot free throws, jump rope or run sprints. The Around the World drill uses chairs in three spots six feet around the basket. Maneuvering around chairs while shooting makes this drill a challenge. Chairs are moved to half court for the M drill. After each shot, players run around chairs to the next spot. X shooting is also difficult by adding a back pedal to half court followed by a shot in transition. Defense is added to the X drill where everything that happens in the game of basketball is simulated. The final drill is sideline to sideline touches with chairs. Defensive slides again are an added feature of this workout. Cool down is a chair shooting drill that allows players to concentrate while winding down from the workout. Each drill has been carefully and creatively designed to push players while working on their shooting. Games are won and lost in the last minutes and fatigue often plays a huge part. Use this DVD to join those who win when it counts! 50 minutes. 2006. |

Shooting Technique and Drills for Championship Lacrosse (DVD) $39.99 With John Danowski,Duke University Head Coach; 2007 NCAA Runner-Up; 2007 ACC Coach of the YearA complete shooter has a variety of moves and can beat a goalie with a variety of shots on any given day. To help your players become complete shooters the staff at Duke demonstrates the finer points of the mechanics of shooting, shooting on the run and crease play. The key parts of shooting they hit on include front foot placement, hips, stomach, chest, shoulders and hands. A different skill is shooting on the run, which is likened to a lay-up in basketball. Players must develop the ability to jump off the inside foot to create space between them and the defender. Another term for "move to the ball" is "up the hash." This term describes a key skill for shooting and scoring and is also demonstrated. At Duke they teach the hands must be away from the body, called "kissing the shoulder." Players show this skill in the "Swat the fly" drill. A move before shooting is the diagonal/back door to the cage. This drill is demonstrated by Duke players live in practice. The next segment highlights the C cut and the fade cut. The pop and slip techniques are also explained. The skills and drills in this DVD are important to all offensive-minded lacrosse players. 39 minutes. 2007. |
